‘Star Trek: Picard’ Trailer Puts Patrick Stewart up Against The Borg, One More Time

Up until today, all we’ve really known about the upcoming CBS All Access series Star Trek: Picard is that former Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) would be returning, and famed novelist Michael Chabon would be showrunning. Also, something about wine, and Picard has a dog now (named Number 1). But that’s pretty much it!

That all changed as of today’s “Star Trek Universe” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast and crew of the highly anticipated spinoff hit the stage to preview much more of what to expect from the series, including the first, full trailer.

The series picks up 17 years after we last saw Picard, in 2002’s theatrical release Star Trek: Nemesis. After that, though, things get complicated. Back in 2009’s Star Trek reboot, we learned that the planet Romulus was destroyed, which kicked off that film’s time travel storyline, and fractured the Star Trek universe into two branches: the Kelvin timeline, a.k.a. everything that’s happened on the big screen; and the regular timeline, a.k.a. everything on TV. In Picard, we learn that the titular captain led an armada on a rescue mission to the doomed planet… Only to fail.

15 years after that event, Picard is retired with his good doggo and making Chateau Picard wine on his families vineyard. Then, he’s called back into space one more time… Though not exactly to Starfleet, or how you’d expect. Along for the ride are Santiago Cabrera as an ex-Starfleet thief/pilot, Michelle Hurd as a former intelligence officer, Evan Evagora, Allison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Isa Briones. The first two episodes of the ten episode first season were directed by Hanelle Culpepper, with episodes three and four directed by Stewart’s old Star Trek: The Next Generation costar (and frequent Star Trek director) Jonathan Frakes.

And a few old friends will stop by, including Data (Brent Spiner), Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Hugh the Borg (Jonathan del Arco)… And oh yeah, a big ol’ Borg cube. Oh, snap.

But that’s not all: Riker (Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) will also be returning, making this a full-fledged Next Generation reunion.

Expect lots more hype as we get closer to the highly anticipated series, which will debut on CBS All Access early 2020.
