Just in time for my brother’s birthday, Titans Season 2 will premiere Friday, September 6 on DC Universe, as just announced at the streamer’s San Diego Comic-Con panel.
Though fans and pundits have cast significant doubt on the future of DC Universe, particularly in light of the launch of WarnerMedia’s big, buzzy HBO Max streaming service, the more comics focused platform will be continuing for the time being. That includes the launch of their dark, adult take on DC Comics’ usually teen focused heroes with Titans.
The show, created by Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, and Greg Berlanti, was the first out of the gate for DC Universe, introduced at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con with a notorious trailer that featured a grown-up Robin (Brenton Thwaites) growling, “Fuck Batman.” The show didn’t let up from there when it debuted on October 12, 2018, featuring copious amounts of sex, violence, cursing, and some extremely teasing nudity.
Though it took its time getting there, the 11 episode Freshman season brought together the Titans team fans know and love: Robin/Dick Grayson, Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft), and Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). Along for the ride were Minka Kelly as Dove, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, Curran Walters as an even more foul mouthed Robin, Jason Todd and more.
The Season 1 finale featured Thwaite’s Grayson entering a dream state and seemingly killing his mentor, Batman, though it all turned out to be a manipulation by the series’ big bad villian, Trigon (Seamus Dever). When Season 2 picks up, they’ll be dealing with him, as well as the introduction of Superboy/Connor Kent (Joshua Orpin), and the very much alive Batman, played by Game of Thrones star Iain Glen.
They’ll also be dealing with a real life tragedy in the form of a stuntman killed during an effects test, which shut down production for two days in July.
Whether that will impact the production long term or not, we’ll have to see. Until then, Titans debuts on September 6, my brother’s birthday. Happy birthday, brother!
