Netflix viewers love a good sci-fi binge, and the streaming service knows it. Last year gave us the addictive family adventure Lost in Space, and 2019 offers something way darker than a modern update on a campy classic: the sci-fi drama Another Life.
Aaron Martin, the creator of Netflix’s horror anthology Slasher, takes a stab at sci-fi with this thriller about first contact (and also deadly contact). Set in the near future, Another Life details what happens after a mysterious alien craft lands on Earth and looms ominously over humanity. The only way to understand what’s visiting Earth is to travel back along the craft/object’s trajectory to its source on the far end of the galaxy. Leading this mission is a tough astronaut played by Katee Sackhoff, an actor that’s pretty familiar with playing a badass on a spaceship.
But who else is along for the ride? And what role does each character fulfill on this potentially one-way mission to who knows where? Before Season 1 of Another Life debuts on Netflix on Thursday, July 25, here’s everything you need to know about the cast.
Katee Sackhoff
Katee Sackhoff plays Niko Breckinridge, the commander of the exploratory space mission. Sackhoff is no stranger to sci-fi, having previously played Lt. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace on the cult classic Battlestar Galactica. Since then Sackhoff appeared on a season of 24, had a lead role in the drama Longmire and a recurring role on The Flash
Justin Chatwin
Justin Chatwin plays Erik Wallace, Niko’s scientist husband. Chatwin is most known for playing Jimmy (a.k.a. Steve) on Shameless. Prior to Shameless he had a recurring role on Weeds as Josh Wilson, and he followed up Shameless by playing Jason Kellerman on Orphan Black. His most recent regular TV role was on CBS’ American Gothic.
Samuel Anderson
Samuel Anderson plays William, the holographic A.I. that assists the crew of the Salvare. Anderson has worked steadily on TV in the UK for years, most notably appearing as Danny during Peter Capaldi’s tenure on Doctor Who. He’s also appeared on Gavin & Stacey, Doctors, and Loaded.
Elizabeth Faith Ludlow
Elizabeth Faith Ludlow plays Cas Isakovic, Niko’s second-in-command. Ludlow’s first recurring TV role came on USA’s Satisfaction in 2015. After that she played Arat from Seasons 7-9 on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Most recently she appeared as First Lieutenant Griffin in the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Blu Hunt
Blu Hunt plays August, the Salvare’s lead engineer. Hunt’s other notable role is as the powerful Inadu, a.k.a. The Hollow, on The Originals. She also plays the mutant Dani Moonstar in the X-Men spinoff film The New Mutants, although who knows when that’s actually going to be released!
A.J. Rivera
A.J. Rivera plays Bernie Martinez, a microbiologist and the Salvare’s resident chef. Rivera was a regular on the short-lived Fox sitcom Grandfathered and has also done guest spots on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Baskets, This Is Us, Jane the Virgin, and Marvel’s Runaways.
Jake Abel
Jake Abel plays Sasha Harrison, the privileged son of the Secretary of Defense and the liaison between the Salvare and the government. Abel played Adam Milligan on Supernatural and appeared in the 2013 YA film The Host. Most recently he was seen playing Trey on Bravo’s Dirty John.
Alex Ozerov
Alex Ozerov plays Oliver Sokolov, a member of August’s engineering team. Ozerov played Alexei Antonov on Syfy’s Bitten and then appeared as Mischa Semenov on The Americans. He also appeared on four episodes of Orphan Black as Ramone, and most recently had a recurring role on Cardinal. You can also find him on the Netflix special Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein, appearing alongside David Harbour.
Alexander Eling
Alexander Eling plays Javier Almanzar, a hacker turned computer engineer. Eling made his acting debut as a cast member of Nickelodeon’s Make It Pop and followed that up with a guest spot on Freeform’s Shadowhunters.
JayR Tinaco
JayR Tinaco plays Zayn Petrossian, the Salvare’s medical officer. Tinaco hails from Australia and appeared in two episodes of the long-running series Rake. More recently Tinaco popped up in the Netflix original movie Always Be My Maybe playing the host at the restaurant Saintly Fare.
Lina Renna
Lisa Renna plays Jana Breckinridge-Wallace, Niko and Erik’s daughter. Renna has a long resume, including episodes of Rogue, Somewhere Between, The 100, and Life Sentence. She’s also appeared in the TV movies Christmas List, Christmas Princess, and A Twist of Christmas.
Selma Blair
Selma Blair plays Harper Glass, a socialite/influencer/journalist that’s one of the most famous people in the world. Blair is most known for the hit films Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde, and The Sweetest Thing as well as playing the super-powered Liz in the first two Hellboy movies. Her TV credits include short-lived comedies Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane and Kath & Kim, as well as playing Kris Jenner on American Crime Story.
Tyler Hoechlin
Tyler Hoechlin plays Ian Yerxa, Niko’s primary competition for lead of the Salvare. Hoechlin is known for playing Superman (yes, Superman!) on the CW’s Supergirl, along with episodes of Arrow and The Flash. Prior to that he played Derek Hale on MTV’s Teen Wolf and Martin on 7th Heaven.
Jessica Camacho
Jessica Camacho plays Michelle Vargas, a communications expert. Vargas is most known for playing Sophie on Sleepy Hollow, Gypsy on The Flash, and Santana on Taken all in the last few years. She’s also appeared in episodes of Dexter, Gossip Girl, Nikita, Last Resort, Castle, and Bones.
