‘Serenity,’ That Bonkers Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway Movie, is Now on Amazon Prime

Stop the presses: Serenity is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. No, not the Joss Whedon movie that broke your heart—though that film is available for rent or purchase on Amazon Prime, if you’re in the mood to feel depressed. No, this Serenity came out earlier this year, stars Academy Award-winning actors Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, and is already considered to be one of the worst films of the year so far. I can’t speak to that, because I haven’t seen it yet, but I have to admit, I’m excited to watch it. How could a movie starring McConaughey and Hathaway earn a 20 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 31 percent from audiences? I truly don’t know, but I’m excited to find out.

Written, directed, and produced by Steven Knight—who also wrote the screenplays for 2002’s Dirty Things and 2007’s Eastern Promises—McConaughey plays a fishing boat captain with a mysterious past, and Hathaway plays his ex-wife Karen. There is apparently a big twist somewhere in there, which I won’t spoil for you or myself, but it had Film Twitter in a tizzy when the film hit theaters in January, with many comparing it M. Night Shyamalan’s more recent and more ridiculed films. Wait, nevermind, I just accidentally spoiled myself, and all I can say is… alright! (Yes, that is a lazy reference to McConaughey’s catchphrase.) Look, say what you will about McConaughey and Hathaway, but at least they’re willing to take risks on a new kind of project.

Supporting members of the Serenity cast include Diane Lane, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, and Jeremy Strong, which feels like it checks out. If you’re not a fan of Amazon, you can also catch the film on Showtime, or purchase it on iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, Vudu, or wherever you purchase digital content. Enjoy!
