Another Life
Another Life is Netflix’s latest highly addictive sci-fi series, a futuristic thrill-ride set after a mysterious alien craft makes first contact with Earth. In order to figure out what the eerily silent, always hovering craft wants from humanity, a group of astronauts are flung into the farthest corner of space to track down the ship’s origin and hopefully meet some peaceful aliens. Heading up the crew is a veteran of sci-fi thrillers, none other than Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica fame. But the rest of the Another Life cast quickly establish themselves as more than worthy of going on this out of this world adventure.
One standout Salvare crew member is the medical officer, played with resolve by relative newcomer JayR Tinaco. But who is Zayn, and where have you seen Tinaco before? Let’s get to know the rising star behind Another Life’s breakout player.
Who is Zayn on Another Life?
Zayn Petrossian is the medical officer aboard the Salvare. What’s truly special about Zayn, aside from all the very much needed medical attention, is that the character breaks new ground for gender nonconforming individuals in outer space. As Tinaco wrote on Instagram, “This character has been an honor to play and an important one at that!” Tinaco’s right, because unlike many of Zayn’s peers, the doctor’s story on Another Life is not defined by coming out or even the character’s gender. This is truly a progressive vision of the future, where the medical officer can live truthfully and honestly and get to be a fully realized character with an area of expertise (and also some romance!).
Who is JayR Tinaco?
JayR Tinaco is an Australian actor of Filipinx descent. Tinaco is an active advocate for LGBTQI+ rights, and proudly so. Deadline’s original description of Zayn’s character from September uses the pronouns ze and hir, which may also apply to Tinaco. Also, Tinaco is a ridiculously talented makeup artist! Seriously, just look at the Instagram post in the section below!
What else has JayR Tinaco appeared in?
Tinaco appeared in two episodes of the long-running Australian series Rake. Another Life also isn’t Tinaco’s first appearance in a Netflix original, either. You may have seen Tinaco playing the host at the restaurant Saintly Fare in the movie Always Be My Maybe.
