New Movies on Demand: ‘Pokémon Detective Pikachu,’ ‘Tolkien,’ ‘Poms,’ and More

Congratulations guys, you made it to another Friday! It is time to take of those loafers, grab a cocktail (or a mocktail for those underage out there!) and rejoice that the week has come to a close. And for those who are crazy tracking the calendar, yes, it is the last Friday of the month. But worry not, just because it is the last Friday in July does not mean the summer is anywhere close to being over. And if you don’t take our word for it, then listen to Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu and/or your cable’s on-demand service, because they are not ceasing with the release of some brand-new, highly-entertaining movies this week!

Diane Keaton lovers (and who doesn’t love Diane Keaton?) and comedy lovers, in general, should check out Poms, a lighthearted comedy about retirement home ladies who decide to start a cheerleading squad. You’ll get a kick out of Keaton in a cheerleader skirt! If you are more in the mood for a biographical drama or just love Lord of the Rings, Tolkein is the perfect movie to indulge in this weekend. The biopic retells the true story behind renowned author J.R.R. Tolkein and the journey that led him to the manifestation of arguably the most iconic fantasy novels in history. And if you are feeling the nerd love but are feeling more comic book-y than fantasy, or if you purely enjoy the comedic timing of Ryan Reynolds, then look no further than Pokémon Detective Pikachu. It might take a second to get over the fact that the voice of our local wise-ass is coming out of Pikachu’s adorable fuzzy body, but the mystery and adventure that encapsulate this live-action film more than assists in that transition!

Excited by the options we’ve teased? Want to know more? Check out what other comedies, biopics and thrillers you can buy or rent this week.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Everyone’s favorite fuzzy and adorably-electric sidekick has got a saucy new attitude in Pokémon Detective Pikachu. When master detective Harry Goodman mysteriously disappears and is declared dead, his 21-year-old son Tim searches for what happened. At the start of his journey in Rhyme City—a metropolis in which pokémon and humans coexist—he encounters Pikachu, voiced by the always-witty Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), a wisecracking pokémon and his father’s former detective partner that only Tim can communicate with. The pair embark on a mystery-solving quest to uncover the secret behind Harry’s death and the importance of the case that could have caused it.

Tolkien

Ever wonder how some people can create works of pure genius? Like how did Stan Lee come up with Spider-Man, what made Ford think of the model-T or what happened that inspired Doctor Emmet Brown from Back to the Future to invent the flux capacitor (well, we know how that one came about)? More and more these days biographical movies are coming out featuring the stories behind geniuses, and the latest one is Tolkien, the film that tells the journey that transformed English professor J.R.R. Tolkien into the author that wrote the famous books “The Hobbit,” “Lord of the Rings” and others. The movie follows Tolkien as makes friends and artistic alliances during the literary’s time at school; but when WWI breaks out, some very difficult decisions will change the path of Tolkien and his fellowship’s future forever. Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies) stars as young Tolkien and Lily Collins (Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile) is Edith Bratt, Tolkien’s long-time love and eventual wife who was also the inspiration behind Middle-Earth characters Lúthien Tinúviel and Arwen Evenstar.
