Lena Waithe Sets Expanded Deal With Amazon Studios

Multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe is expanding her deal with Amazon Studios, as just announced at the streamer’s Television Critics Association panel. Waithe, who will producing the upcoming horror anthology THEM for the studio, will work with Amazon to create and produce more original series for their Prime Video platform.

“Lena is a powerhouse writer and producer who also has a gift for identifying exciting and authentic voices,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios via press release. “Our upcoming series THEM is the result of her rare ability to cultivate brilliant voices like Little Marvin and bring his wholly original and compelling vision to Amazon. We look forward to collaborating with Lena and her team for years to come.”

Waithe added, “I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Amazon Studios and am looking forward to this next chapter. Both of our goals are aligned in that we want to continue elevating storytellers who are underrepresented and have a unique vision of the world.”

After jumping to the mainstream for her role as Denise on Netflix’s Master of None, where she co-wrote the Emmy Award winning “Thanksgiving” episode, Waithe has been on a roll. She’s written the feature film Queen & Slim, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, and Twenties, which she created and wrote for BET

Waithe also created and is the executive producer on Showtime’s critically acclaimed The Chi, which has been greenlit for a third season, and BET’s remake of Boomerang, which has been greenlit for a second season. She’s also a producer on Step Sisters and Dear White People.

Point being, Waithe is a creator who isn’t slowing down anytime soon, and it makes a lot of sense for Amazon — who is rapidly expanding the ranks of the creators they’re working with — to snap her up now. The first season of THEM, titled THEM: Covenant does not have a debut date as of yet, but is part of a two season deal for the series.
