After more than a year away from our screens, Netflix has finally unveiled the first teaser trailer for 13 Reasons Why, which will hit Netflix on Friday, August 23. If the new trailer is any indication, 13 Reasons Why is going full-on murder mystery with a harrowing Season 3 tagline: “Who killed Bryce Walker?” Liberty High’s resident bully seems to have met his match, although questions abound (13, perhaps?) about what exactly went down. Between a new narrator, a new mystery, and new alliances, things are about to take a turn for the dramatic.

In addition to dropping a teaser and announcing the premiere date for 13 Reasons Why Season 3, Netflix also released the official description for the new installment:

Eight months after preventing Tyler from committing an unthinkable act at Spring Fling, Clay, Tony, Jessica, Alex, Justin, and Zach find ways to shoulder the burden of the cover-up together while helping Tyler move toward recovery. But when the aftermath of a tumultuous Homecoming game culminates in the disappearance of a football player, and Clay finds himself under police scrutiny, it’s up to a shrewd outsider to steer the group through an investigation that threatens to lay bare everyone’s deepest secrets. The stakes are raised in this riveting third season of 13 Reasons Why, as the consequences of even the most well-intended actions can alter a life forever.

Netflix’s description alludes to the central mystery of 13 Reasons Why Season 3: Bryce’s (Justin Prentice) death. The teaser trailer builds on this storyline, as we see the large ensemble cast, dressed in all black, standing around Bryce’s casket. “I need to know what happened to my son,” says Bryce’s mother. “If any of you know anything, please say something.” One person who seems to know something? Clay (Dylan Minnette), whose jaw tenses as he shoots a look to the camera.

“Here’s the thing about the kids at Liberty High,” says the show’s new narrator, Ani (Grace Saif). “They’re connected by their secrets. Connected, and forever changed.” What exactly are these secrets? What does Clay know? And most importantly, who killed Bryce Walker?

While it would be great to finally have all our 13 Reasons Why questions answered, it seems likely that the drama will continue past the Season 3 finale: today, Netflix also announced that the series has been renewed for a fourth and final season. According to Variety13 Reasons Why Season 4 will feature the group’s graduation from Liberty High, a fitting (and hopefully happy!) conclusion to these characters’ story.
