'Ahsoka' Season Finale Recap: The Force Is Wrong With This One
Whovians, I regret to inform you that we have a new streaming service we have to subscribe to: HBO Max. Warner Media’s upcoming streaming platform just secured the exclusive streaming rights to all 11 seasons of Doctor Who, the reboot series of the classic British TV show that launched in 2005. Clearly, someone at HBO Max knew I could not live without regular access to David Tennant in a pinstriped suit, and that person is absolutely right.
The deal also gives the new service license to stream a number of other hit BBC shows, including the British Office, Top Gear, Luther, and The Honorable Woman. HBO Max will in spring 2020, and while there is not a set price yet, it will reportedly cost “slightly more” than the cost of HBO Now, which is $14.99 a month. And sometime before the spring of 2020, Doctor Who will be leaving other streaming services faster than you can say “Rose Tyler, I-” Before you panic, here are your options.
IS DOCTOR WHO ON NETFLIX?
No, though both the classic Who and the new Who was once streaming on Netflix, the show left the streaming service in 2016.
IS DOCTOR WHO ON HULU?
Neither classic Who nor new Who are available on Hulu. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
IS DOCTOR WHO ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO?
Yes! Right now, all of the new Doctor Who seasons and Christmas specials are streaming free for Amazon Prime subscribers, with the exception of the most recent Season 11, which is available for purchase for $25.99. However, you might want to hurry up and watch them while you can, because the episodes will no longer be free to stream once HBO Max goes live. Once that happens, you will still be able to purchase digital copies of the seasons for $24.99 each (or $1.99 per episode).
You can also watch all of the classic Doctor Who episodes dating back to 1963 with a BritBox subscription, and we assume this will still be the case when HBO Max launches, given that the HBO Max deal includes only the new series.
WHERE ELSE WILL I BE ABLE TO STREAM DOCTOR WHO?
Haven’t you heard? HBO Max, baby! Stay tuned with Decider for more updates on when exactly that will be. That said, you could also purchase digital copies of the seasons from iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, and more. You can also call up your mom and ask her to mail you your old DVDs. That’s what I’ll be doing.
