‘Fleabag’ and Phoebe Waller-Bridge Win Big at the 2019 TCA Award

If critics are anything like Emmy voters, than Fleabag is going to have a great awards run this year. At the Television Critics Association’s 2019 Awards Fleabag and its creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge swept the night, winning Program of The Year, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Individual Achievement in Comedy.

The unexpected continuation of the BBC Three and Amazon Prime original has had an incredible run, and currently its second season has a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on 78 reviews. The series focuses on Waller-Bridge’s character Fleabag, an angry, confused, sexually open, and brutally honest woman living in London. The series is known for its frank and hilarious take on sex as well as its innovative breaking of the “fourth wall.”

In addition to Fleabag, the TCA presented awards to Netflix’s Queer Eye for Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming, HBO’s Chernobyl for Outstanding Achievement in Movie or Miniseries, and Netflix’s Russian Doll for Outstanding New Program. Michelle Williams also took home the award for Individual Achievement in Drama for her role as Gwen Verdon in FX’s Fosse/Verdon. Additionally David Milch was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on NYPD Blue and Deadwood.

“This is an exciting time for television and there’s no single formula for excellence, as our honorees include reputation restoring biopics, female-driven half-hours, the rare spinoff to equal its illustrious predecessor and a piece of difficult-to-watch history that couldn’t feel more vital and relevant, making for a special TCA Awards night,” Daniel Fienberg, TCA President and The Hollywood Reporter Chief TV Critic said. The full list of winners from the Television Critics Association’s 2019 Awards is below.
