The journey may be over but we will carry on our wayward sons. At the Television Critics Association’s 2019 summer tour Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and other members of the Supernatural cast took the stage to dish on the final season of their beloved series. There were a lot of emotions both from the cast and critics in the room.

“It feels different going into this season because it is the end,” Misha Collins said. “I think we’re all trying not to be too precious about it.”

Adding to that, Jensen Ackles emphasized they’re treating this final season as business as usual. “I’m trying to stave off the emotion at least until Episode 18 or 19,” Ackles said.

The cast was also asked how they thought the series wold end. “In all fairness in Season 1, I thought the series would end when we closed the trunk and said we have work to do,” Jared Padalecki said. “I was sort of wonderfully in the same position as Sam was in. I didn’t know how the show was going to end.”

Created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural first premiered on The CW on September 13, 2005. Equally heartfelt, dark, and silly, the fantasy drama slowly gained a devoted fanbase over the course of its 14 seasons as it followed Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester’s (Jared Padalecki). Over the years these demon-hunting brothers have battled evil through musicals, Scooby-Doo cartoons, and oh-so-many trips to heaven and hell and back again.

For several years, Supernatural never had to deal with permanent endings. Even if a character died, it was completely plausible for them to come back to life. That’s changing in the show’s final season. Each episode of Season 15 will act as a building block to Supernatural’s ultimate conclusion. This isn’t the time for standalone episodes.

“This is a very special thing to me. And I want it to end in a way that does justice to what we’ve done for the past 14 and a half years,” Ackles said “For the fans who have been with us on this journey this is going to feel right, and this is going to feel good.”

Ackles also noted that he’s not closing any doors and would be open to conversations about some sort of Supernatural continuation in the future. Fingers crossed we get more of Sam and Dean in our future. But in the meantime we’ll be obsessively watching that final season.
