‘Euphoria’ Fans React to That Finale Song: “Give Zendaya Her Emmy”

So that’s what Rue’s hoodie is all about. On Sunday night, the Euphoria finale cleared up some of this season’s biggest storylines while leaving plenty of drama for Season 2 (**spoilers ahead!**). But when the dust settled on the Season 1 finale, fans weren’t talking about Nate’s psychopathy, or Jules’ tearful goodbye, or even that maroon hoodie — the last item connecting Rue to her late father. They were talking about Zendaya‘s performance of “All For Us,” a surprise addition to Euphoria‘s already stacked soundtrack.

In the final few minutes of HBO’s Euphoria Season 1 finale, Rue relapses, and after collapsing on her bed, her body rises up like she’s possessed by demons (which, as a recovering drug addict, is mostly true). As Rue stumbles through her bedroom, Euphoria‘s soundtrack begins to play, but instead of the usual synth beats, Zendaya’s vocals (!!!) come through. Euphoria‘s reality shifts, as Rue attempts to interact with her family but they don’t seem to see or hear her — with the exception being her father, who pulls her into a hug as she sings, “Do it for the fam.”

Euphoria then shifts into full music video mode, as hundreds of chorus members in maroon cloaks lift Rue up and spin her around. She tries to get away, but she’s pulled back in, and at the end of the sequence, she stands atop the mountain of bodies and looks out over her neighborhood. “When it all comes down to it,” sings Zendaya, “I hope one of you come back to remind me of who I was when I go disappear into that good night.”

And then… she falls into the pile of maroon trench coaters. Cut to black. “‘Til then,” says drug dealer Fezco (Angus Cloud).

The moment was dramatic, beautifully shot, and so damn Euphoria. Obviously, fans loved it — once they got over their shock, that is. “Is this Zendaya singing???” asked one viewer. “Zendaya came in with the VOCALS,” tweeted another. “Just give Zendaya her fucking Emmy. Right here. Right now,” wrote another fan.

Even Zendaya and HBO got in on the fun. After the episode aired, she tweeted a picture of her in Rue’s hoodie, writing, “Haven’t worn or washed it since we wrapped. Safe to say I’m deep in my feels lol.” Same girl, same.
