‘American Crime Story’ Will Tackle the Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal

After so many questions and even more think pieces, FX has finally announced the third season of its American Crime Story franchise. And Monica Lewinsky is producing. At the Television Critics Association’s 2019 summer tour FX announced that the third season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series would be entitled Impeachment: American Crime Story. The season will revolve around the Clinton presidency scandal.

“FX’s American Crime Story franchise has become a cultural touchstone, providing greater context for stories that deserve greater understanding like the O.J. Simpson trial and saga, and Andrew Cunanan’s tragic crime spree which concluded with the assassination of Gianni Versace,” Chairman of FX Network and FX Productions John Landgraf said. “This franchise re-examines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant, nuanced and entertaining.”

The third season of the anthology series will be written by Sarah Burgess who will also serve as executive producer. According to FX’s press release it will revolve around “the national scandal that swept up Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp as principal characters in the country’s first impeachment proceedings in over a century.” Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall, and Sarah Paulson will also produce in addition to Lewinsky, Henrietta Conrad, and Jemima Khan.

And you better believe Paulson is also starring in this season. The Ryan Murphy favorite will play Linda Tripp, the civil servant who secretly recorded Clinton and Lewinsky’s phone calls. Annaleigh Ashford (Masters of Sex, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) will play Paula Jones, the former Arkansas state employee who sued Clinton for sexual harassment. And Beanie Feldstein (Book Smart, Lady Bird) will star as Monica Lewinsky.

American Crime Story has been a hugely successful anthology series for the network. Season 1 of the show, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,  received 22 Emmy Award nominations in 13 categories and won nine awards. Its second installment, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, received nine nominations and took home three awards.

Production for the series begins in February. Impeachment: American Crime Story will premiere on FX Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 10/9C.
