‘Atlanta’ Renewed for Season 4 at FX

Donald Glover‘s Atlanta isn’t going anywhere quite yet. Today, as part of their panel at the Television Critics Association press tour, FX announced that Atlanta has been renewed for a fourth season, with production on both Seasons 3 and 4 to begin next spring. The news is a major breakthrough for Glover fans, who have been met with radio silence since FX renewed the Emmy-winning comedy for a third season in June 2018.

According to FX, production on Atlanta Season 3 and the just-announced Season 4 will begin in Spring 2020. While no premiere date has been set for either installment — keep your fingers crossed that we’ll see Season 3 in late 2020 or early 2021 — the network announced that both will contain eight episodes. This is considerably less than previous seasons of Atlanta: Season 1 capped off at 10 episodes, while Season 2 upped that number to 11. But fans shouldn’t be too worried about the reduced episode count: if anyone can craft something groundbreaking in just eight episodes, it’s Glover.

“What more can be said about Atlanta than the critical acclaim and accolades that Donald, Paul, Dianne, Stephen and Hiro have earned for two exceptional seasons of what is clearly one of the best shows on television,” said Eric Schrier, President of FX Entertainment. “This group of collaborators and cast have created one of the most original, innovative stories of this generation and we are proud to be their partners.”

Atlanta was created by Glover, who also stars, directs, and serves as an executive producer. In addition, the comedy is executive produced by Paul Simms, Dianne McGunigle, Stephen Glover and Hiro Murai, and produced by FX Productions.

Glover has a lot to live up to in Season 3 and 4: it’s already a five-time Emmy winner, two-time Golden Globe winner, and Peabody, Critics’ Choice, and Writers Guild of America winner (and that’s just the beginning of the list). In May, Atlanta nabbed the #2 spot in Decider’s list of the Best FX Shows of All Time — a king among kings, if you will. As our Lea Palmieri wrote at the time, “Donald Glover has created one of the most unique and influential shows, guaranteed to inspire future generations of storytellers that aren’t afraid to be funny, twisted, and sure to keep it 100% real at all times.”
