HBO’s “Recommended By Humans” Tool Enlists Real People, Not Robots, To Tell You What to Watch

If the algorithms and the robots behind them have you feeling let down when it comes to choosing your next binge-watch, HBO understands. It’s why they’ve launched their new Recommended By Humans tool today, and it’s not only your new best friend, it’s powered by them too.

Recommended By Humans is a gorgeous and colorful canvas (it looks like a pretty digital quilt!) you can drag around on your desktop or mobile, and features 36 unique video suggestions and over 150 tweet recommendations from real HBO fans. Seriously, just watch one video and you’ll not only feel like you know the person speaking, like they could be a real friend of yours, but you’ll also feel their passion and excitement for the show they’re talking about. Instead of a queue pushing random titles in front of your eyeballs, these people say it with their words and the expressions on their faces. Plus, their recommendations will link to more than 50 free HBO episodes, movies and documentaries, so you can sample their favorite program and see if it’s a match for you as well.

The tool has a wide variety of HBO shows available including recent hits such as Euphoria, Chernobyl, and Big Little Lies, as well as quirky comedies Eastbound and Down and Flight of the Conchords, and old school titles like True Blood, Sex and the City and The Sopranos. Yes, Game of Thrones is on there too. The recommendations link to the series or film trailer, as well as the first episode of a series and full film suggested, available to stream for free.

Recommended By Humans is not only the first HBO brand campaign to entirely feature fans, but it really highlights the enthusiasm and emotional connection people have specifically with this network’s programming.

The tool will be updated regularly with new fan recs, and you can join in by using #HumanReco on Twitter and Instagram — and keep your eyes peeled on those platforms for new recommendations to come.
