Is a ‘Resident Evil’ TV Show Coming to Netflix?

Over the weekend, news spread online that a Resident Evil TV series was finally confirmed to be coming to Netflix. Now, there have been viral hoaxes and legit rumors about a potential show for years — including a very serious report back in January — but so far Netflix has remained officially mum on the prospect of a Resident Evil television series. That’s why fans got so excited when the news went viral.

However, here’s the truth: nothing new has been reported about a possible Resident Evil series since January 2019. You can’t currently stream the original Resident Evil film series on the streaming service, and it’s unclear if a show ever will see the light of day. Most of the posts going around include fan art that’s been recycled a few times over the years.

Is a Resident Evil Television Series Coming to Netflix?

Maybe. On January 25, 2019, Deadline published a report that Netflix was “developing a scripted series based on the hit action horror franchise” Resident Evil. Apparently, Constantin Film was going to produce the series which would “expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the existing (sic) mythology.” As Decider’s own Kayla Cobb wrote, this news not only made sense, but was a “chillingly smart move” for Netflix.

Here’s the catch, no one would comment about this report, nor would they speak on the record. Deadline went on to report that Netflix was searching for a showrunner for the projects. All this would suggest that Netflix was likely developing a Resident Evil series, but didn’t want to make an announcement until they had all their ducks in a row: showrunner, director, cast, etc.

As of today, August 6, 2019, no new credible news has trickled out about a Resident Evil series on Netflix. It’s all just been fan hype and regurgitated art. That means the show is still either in the early stages of pre-production or it’s fallen apart behind-the-scenes.
