‘Barry’ Star Sarah Goldberg Says She Wants To Go Even “Darker” For Season 3

In a recent interview, Barry star Sarah Goldberg noted that she wants to go “darker” for the upcoming third season of the hit HBO series starring Bill Hader. Additionally, she stated that she plans to go full Gena Rowlands and mirror the famed actress’ role in A Woman Under the Influence.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldberg talked about how she was apparently the last to know about her own Emmy nomination for supporting actress in a comedy series since she was on a small Greek island with bad reception when the announcements were made. Her boyfriend, who was vacationing with her at the time, mistakenly recited the list of last year’s nominees to her.

“We were like, ‘Ah, well! Brilliant for the show! Now, let’s go watch this Greek sunset,’ ” Goldberg recounted. “Then, once we got reception again, my phone kept buzzing.” Goldberg plays Sally in the series, girlfriend to hitman/actor Barry and a self-absorbed aspiring actress with a ton of baggage.
In the interview, the Vancouver-born 34-year-old spoke about her theater-to-TV transition, her close family bond with the cast and her hopes for the rest of Sally’s story.

“I just want to keep pushing for complexity, and I would like to even go darker,” she said. “Where we left things off was, ‘Here is the moment when she’s getting everything she thought she’d ever wanted, but actually, the cost is too high.’ It would be interesting to explore the idea of achieving the success we think we want, but without being fully cooked, without being mentally healthy.”

As far as how she plans to achieve this goal, the actress added: “I want Gena Rowlands. I want to go the whole way! I want A Woman Under the Influence. I want all of it!”

Season 3 of Barry is slated to premiere in Spring of 2020 on HBO.
