Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Sixty-five years after he first stomped through a city, Godzilla is still going strong in 2019 with mega-movies crashing into multiplexes. This year’s kaiju feature was Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a sequel to 2014’s Godzilla.

Behind the camera for this monster movie was horror director Michael Dougherty, who previously terrified audiences with Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus. Fun fact: he also has a history with the X-Men franchise, having written the script for X2 and provided the story for X-Men: Apocalypse. The film’s all-star cast included Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga, as doctors, ex-spouses, and the parents of Millie Bobby Brown’s character. Also included in the cast were Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Sally Hawkins, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ken Watanabe, Zhag Ziyi, and many more.

If you missed Godzilla: King of the Monsters when it was in theaters, you’re in luck! It’s about to drop digitally, meaning you can bring the legendary movie monster home. But when will it be released? And what formats will it be released on? And will you ever be able to stream it? Let’s find out!

When will Godzilla: King of the Monsters be released digitally?

Contrary to early press releases that stated Godzilla: King of the Monsters would be released on August 6, the film is currently scheduled to drop digitally on August 13. You can pre-order the film right now in Apple, Prime Video, Google Play, Vudu, or your preferred digital video vendor.

When will Godzilla: King of the Monsters be available to rent digitally?

While you will be able to purchase Godzilla: King of the Monsters digitally on August 13, you won’t be able to rent it quite yet. Traditionally, movies are made available to rent digitally two weeks after they’re released, usually the same date as the Blu-ray release. That means it’s likely you’ll be able to check out the latest Godzilla feature for a few bucks on August 27.

When will the Godzilla: King of the Monsters Blu-ray be released?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released in three different physical formats: 4K UHD Combo Pack (includes 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and Digital copies), Blu-ray Combo Pack (includes Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital copies), and DVD Special Edition (which just includes the DVD, but I guess it’s special because it has a bunch of special features that are also on the other releases?). All of those releases come out on August 27.

When is Godzilla: King of the Monsters coming to DVD?

Godzilla: King of Monsters comes to DVD on August 27. While the DVD will include all the special features listed below, it doesn’t come with a digital download of the film like the 4K UHD and Blu-ray releases.

What special features will be included?

The 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD and digital releases will all include the following special features:

  • Commentary by Director
  • Godzilla: Nature’s Fearsome Guardian
  • Mothra: Queen of the Monsters
  • King Ghidorah: The Living Extinction Machine
  • Rodan: Airborne God of Fire
  • Godzilla 2.0
  • Making Morthra
  • Creating Ghidorah
  • Reimagining Rodan

  • The Undersea Lair
  • Millie Bobby Brown: Force of Nature
  • Monster Tech: Monarch Joins the Fight
  • Monsters Are Real

When will Godzilla: King of the Monsters be available on Netflix?

Probably never! Warner Bros. does not have a deal in place to add new movies to Netflix, which is why you can’t find any WB movies from the past few years on the service. The same goes for Hulu, so don’t wait to catch Godzilla: King of the Monsters on either service.

When will Godzilla: King of the Monsters be available on HBO?

The good news is that plenty of Warner Bros. movies do end up available to stream on HBO. While HBO won’t make that date public until closer to when it’s available, we can use the wait time between previous WB movies’ theatrical release and HBO premiere to make an informed guess. With that info, we can guess that Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be added to HBO sometime in January 2020.
