Miley Cyrus could have single-handedly propelled Hotel Transylvania into PG-13 territory. This afternoon, Cyrus went on a no-holds-barred Twitter rant about her relationship with Liam Hemsworth, who filed for divorce this week. There are plenty of interesting details in the singer’s thread, but perhaps the most surprising nugget is about 2012 animated film Hotel Transylvania. According to Cyrus, she was “kicked off Hotel Transylvania for buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it.” The star was replaced by Selena Gomez, who went on to voice Dracula’s daughter Mavis in the franchise’s three films.
Cyrus’ Thursday Twitter thread detailed various instances of her hard-partying ways in her “teens and early 20’s,” many of which she’s been open about over the past few years. “I fucked up and cheated in relationships when I was young,” she wrote. “I lost a massive Walmart deal at 17 for ripping a bong.” These we knew about. But then, a surprise: “I got kicked off hotel Transylvania for buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it,” she wrote. Uh, what?
Way back in early 2012, Cyrus dropped out of Hotel Transylvania for unknown reasons. At the time, Entertainment Weekly reported that “the studio had no comment” regarding her departure, which came just seven months before the film’s September release. Gomez, a fellow Disney alum, was recast in the role, and she continued to play Mavis — Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) century-old “teenage” daughter — in the sequel films Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation.
Now, thanks to Cyrus’ detailed post-breakup thread, we finally know why Cyrus suddenly left the franchise. While co-stars Sandler, Andy Samberg, Fran Drescher, and Steve Buscemi likely would have appreciated the penis cake, I can see why it might not sit well with studio execs looking to keep the film family-friendly. But that being said, it’s still a lame reason to fire Queen Miley. Let your voice actors eat cake, dammit.
