‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ is On Amazon Prime, But Make Sure You Turn Off Motion Smoothing Before You Watch

This weekend is shaping up to be a great one for movie lovers who subscribe to Amazon Prime, because Mission: Impossible Fallout is now available to stream for free.

And, in addition to Fallout, A Simple Favor is also now streaming on Prime, aka Paul Feig’s frothy, fantastic and fantastically-overlooked dark comedy which he told me in a recent interview he hopes finds new life on streaming. But we’re not here to talk about my interview with Paul Feig, which included updates on the sequels to both The Heat and Spy, as well as information about Feig’s upcoming romantic comedy, The Last Christmas. After all, if you wanted to read that interview, you’d have clicked on that post and would currently be learning all about Feig’s thoughts on directing for the streaming era and the Academy’s distaste for genre films and comedies. (OK, I’ll stop. I’m done now. Promise.)

But jokes aside, the arrival of Mission: Impossible  – Fallout on Prime is exciting news, as some have dubbed the film the best of the six films in Mission: Impossible franchise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie—who also directed the fifth film, Rogue Nation, and is slated to direct the next two, as-of-yet untitled films in the series—Tom Cruise stars as everyone’s favorite Impossible Mission Force agent, Ethan Hunt. New to the series is Henry Cavill as a CIA assassin with a perfect jawline named August Walker, Angela Basset as the new CIA director, and Vanessa Kirby as a shady arms dealer, White Widow. Meanwhile, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan, and Alec Baldwin all reprised their roles from previous Impossible films.

It’s been over two decades since the first film hit theaters in 1996, and Fallout leans into Cruise’s—and Ethan’s—age, which for Cruise was 55 at the time of filming. No longer does Ethan land every jump—in fact, he misses quite a few of them. But he never lets that stop him from leaping. If you’re looking for a straightforward action flick that’s just pure fun, you won’t go wrong with Mission: Impossible  – Fallout, now streaming on Prime. Just make sure you turn off motion smoothing before you watch it, because Tom Cruise—as he said in his video PSA from December 2018 that gained support from many filmmakers—really, really wants you to avoid “the Soap Opera effect,” aka, the low-quality image that is a side effect of a feature TVs have that is intended to reduce motion blur for filmed sporting events.

You don’t want to disappoint Tom Cruise, do you?
