Kit Harington, Gemma Chan to Play Major Avengers Characters in Marvel’s ‘Eternals’

The Marvel Universe keeps getting bigger. Just a day after the surprise announcement of three new Disney+ live-action superhero shows (Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight just in case you somehow missed the news), Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took to the stage during the Disney Studios panel at D23 to add a few more names to the MCU: Kit Harington and Gemma Chan.

Harington and Chan join the expansive cast of The Eternals, the Marvel movie dropping on November 6, 2020. The film, coming from director Chloe Zhao based on quite possibly the wildest idea legendary Marvel artist Jack Kirby ever had, already boasts an ensemble that includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Brian Tyree Henry. The film centers around the Eternals, a race of ancient godlike beings that come to Earth to stop the threat of their twisted counterparts, the Deviants.

Chan–who appeared in last year’s Captain Marvel as the Kree Starforce member Minn-Erva, albeit under heavy blue makeup–will play Sersi, by far one of the most prominent Eternals in the comics. Chan was also seen in the mega-hit movie Crazy Rich Asians. Harington, fresh off of playing Jon Snow on the mega-series Game of Thrones, will play a human character named Dane Whitman.

Both of these characters are major, major deals and their presence in the film potentially ups Eternals‘ importance to the MCU even more. Harington’s character is also known as the Black Knight in the comics, the fan favorite wielder of the Ebony Blade. The thing is, both Sersi and Black Knight have been off and on members of the Avengers in the comics, and they were even romantically linked during a time in the ’90s when all the Avengers wore rad AF bomber jackets. Listen: what I’m saying is, this casting means we are two steps closer to getting a Bomber Jacket-Era Avengers movie and I am into that.

The Eternals opens in theaters on November 6, 2020.
