John Travolta Almost Handed Taylor Swift’s VMA to Drag Queen Jade Jolie

John Travolta just can’t seem to get it right when it comes to award shows. At the MTV VMAs on Monday night, the actor seemed to confuse Taylor Swift with Drag Race star Jade Jolie, who played the pop star in her Video of the Year-winning “You Need to Calm Down.” Jolie played off the moment, but she wasn’t the only one laughing: Twitter had an absolute field day with the mix-up, which was eerily reminiscent of Travolta’s Idina Menzel pronunciation flub at the 2014 Oscars. As Crooked Media’s Ira Madison III put it, “John Travolta pulling another Adele Dazeem.”

For reasons beyond my comprehension, MTV asked Travolta (alongside Queen Latifah) to present the award for Video of the Year, a stacked category that featured Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down,” Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” (the remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, obvs), Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next,” “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers (the DESERVED winner), and “a lot” by 21 Savage ft. J. Cole. Travolta managed to read Swift’s name correctly — he learned his lesson after the Oscars — but as her video participants began to fill the stage, things got hairy. With Swift still in the audience, Travolta turned to Jolie, in full T.Swift drag, and attempted to hand her the award.

Jolie appeared to shrug him off and say something to the effect of “Lol, not me, dude,” and the actor sheepishly held on to the award. But of course, the entire thing was captured on camera, and before long, Twitter blew up with jokes. “I am…. reeling,” wrote one viewer. “John Travolta now owns the two unintentionally funniest moments in awards history — this and Adele Dazeem,” said another. Even Variety got in on the fun, writing alongside a clip of the moment, “Jade Jolie or Taylor Swift? John Travolta isn’t sure.”
