Netflix Sets Premiere Date for ‘The Irishman’ After Theatrical Negotiations Fall Apart

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman won’t be released in major theaters, after all. On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Netflix is officially forgoing a wide release for Scorsese’s mob drama after talks with AMC and Cineplex broke down yet again. The streaming giant and the major theater chains have been haggling over The Irishman‘s theatrical release for months, but ultimately could not agree on whether to pursue a three-week exclusivity window, as Netflix did for Roma, or a 90-day window, as the theaters wanted. As a result, THR reports that The Irishman will premiere in small indie theaters on November 1 before hitting Netflix globally on November 27.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, as well as a New York Times report published last week, Netflix and theater chains AMC and Cineplex have been negotiating a deal to distribute Scorsese’s film for months. Both outlets report that Netflix and Scorsese pushed for a major roll-out to best promote The Irishman, a likely Oscars contender, but at the end of the day (and after two failed negotiation sessions) they were unable to compromise on the film’s distribution window. Netflix has been a staunch advocate of a limited theatrical window — they appeased theater chains by giving Roma a 21-day exclusive window last year — while AMC and Cineplex have insisted that all films play in for the traditional 90 days.

With a major theatrical roll-out a non-starter, Netflix now hopes to bring The Irishman — which was already delayed due to the digital de-aging process done on Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino — to audiences as soon as possible. THR reports that Scorsese’s drama will debut exclusively in select independent theaters on November 1 before hitting Netflix on November 27, the day before Thanksgiving. The late fall premiere will enable The Irishman to best compete with other awards hopefuls, many of which will also hit theaters (and streaming, in the case of The Report) in November and December.
