You may not be familiar with the name Lily-Rose Depp just yet, but you will be soon, thanks to the highly-anticipated upcoming Netflix original film, The King.
The trailer for The King, an adaptation of several of Shakespeare’s histories, dropped Tuesday morning and gave us a whole lot to think about. There was Timothée Chalamet‘s bowl-cut, which was appropriately unflattering for his role as the reluctant King Henry V of England. Then there was Robert Pattinson’s long-haired wig for his role as The Dauphin—fans were split on whether said wig was glorious or hideous. But there was one face that piqued curiosity, and that was star Lily-Rose Depp, who plays King Henry’s wife, Catherine.
Who is Lily-Rose Depp?
Depp is a 20-year-old French-American actor and model, who first appeared on screen in a small cameo role in Kevin Smith’s 2014 comedy-horror Tusk. In that film she was known only as “Girl Clerk #2,” but Depp reprised the role in Smith’s 2016 spin-off Yoga Hosers, this time as the lead character Colleen Collette, alongside her close friend and Smith’s daughter, Harley Quinn Smith. Depp has also appeared in The Dancer, Planetarium, Savage (Les Fauves), and A Faithful Man, and has modeled for Chanel and appeared in a Paris Vogue shoot.

If you were thinking, “Wait a minute… Depp… like controversial Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp?” you are correct. Lily-Rose Depp is indeed Johnny Depp’s daughter. John “Jack” Christopher Depp III is her brother, and her mother is French singer and model Vanessa Paradis, who Johnny Depp dated from 1998 to 2012. After Depp’s parents separated, they maintained joint custody of her and she split her time between Los Angeles and Paris.
How is Lily-Rose Depp connected to Harley Quinn Smith?
According to an interview with Nylon, Depp and Smith have been BFFs since kindergarten. “I remember visiting the classroom and just being the shyest little girl,” Depp said in that interview, “hiding behind my mom’s legs and stuff. But Harley was one of the first people I actually talked to and opened up to, and she was one of my first friends ever.”
As mentioned above, Depp and Smith starred in Yoga Hosers together in 2016 after their characters first appeared in Tusk two years earlier. Depp and Quinn played two teenage girls who spend their days at a yoga studio and must battle forces of evil in order to attend a cool high school party. Though Yoga Hosers was not well-received by critics or audiences, Depp and Smith undoubtedly had a good time as best friends both on-screen and off.
Who is Lily-Rose Depp in The King?
In The King, Depp plays “Catherine,” aka Catherine of Valois, the wife of King Henry V and queen consort of England from 1420 until 1422, and who was also the daughter of Charles VI of France. In Shakespeare’s Henry V, which is the partial basis for The King, Catherine has a very muted role—a prim princess who speaks with a thick French accent and offers some comic relief. But based on the trailer for Netflix’s The King, we have a feeling director David Michôd is going to give Depp a lot more to work with.
The King is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 11, and on Netflix on November 1.
