Carnival Row

Powered by Reelgood

It’s the last week of true summer, sob. Before the weekends of homework, studying and—if you’re not a student— obligatory plans kick in, take in your last weekend of freedom and do what you want to do! And by ‘do what you want to do’ we mean do nothing and indulge in your favorite streaming platforms, of course. With this Sunday marking the first of a new month, get ready for an onslaught of brand-new movies and shows to explore on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, HBO and more.
We are calling this weekend is the weekend of Magic because two of the most highly-anticipated fantasy series are finally hitting your streaming platforms. It has been over three decades since Jim Henson’s Dark Crystal hit theaters and cultivated its cult fanbase, but Netflix is finally paying homage to the late Muppets creator with the release of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, an animated fantasy series that explains what happened between the Glaflings and the Skeksis that led to the story we know today.
The second—and even more controversial— fantasy series coming out this weekend is Amazon Prime’s Carnival Row. The series follows the star-crossed romance between human detective Philo (Orlando Bloom) and rebellious faerie Vingnette (Cara Delevingne). It’s a romantic, chaotic and fantastic show that will either suck you in or spit you out!
Enjoy your last Saturday night of summer freedom with HBO’s Saturday movie, Can You Ever Forgive Me? This intriguing, ingenious biographical film tells the true story of Lee Israel, the woman who forged literary letters from people like Fanny Brice and Ernest Hemingway. Melissa McCarthy stars as Israel and delivers an Oscar-worthy performance that would be terrible to miss.
Curious about what else is hitting Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO? Here’s what’s new on streaming this weekend.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance: Season 1

Fans of Jim Henson’s cult animated action-fantasy film The Dark Crystal are finally getting their long-awaited prequel. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance takes us back to the mythic world Thra, where Gelflings live under the aristocratic and powerful Skeksis in ignorant bliss. But when Gelflings Rian (a Crystal Castle guard), Brea (a clan princess) and Deet (an animal caretaker) discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they inspire a rebellion to save their world before it falls victim to complete annihilation. The Netflix-original series features the vocal talents of actors like Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland) and more. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will surely answer any questions audiences had when the original movie came out, and its stunning, non-CGI graphics will welcome in the puppeteering renaissance.

Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Based on the bestselling autobiography of the same name, Can You Ever Forgive Me? is the true story of infamous writer and con artist Lee Israel. Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) plays Israel, a struggling, alcoholic author who began forging letters from deceased famous authors and playwrights in the early ’90s until she was exposed and arrested for her crimes. McCarthy’s performance as the abrasive, unlikeable Israel is stellar and even earned her a much-deserved Academy Award nomination. Richard E. Grant (Wah-Wah) also got an Oscar nod for his performance as Israel’s drinking partner and accomplice, Jack Hock.

Carnival Row

Carnival Row is the new Amazon Prime series that the universe has been arguing over for the past months. Starring Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad) and Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), the series follows two star-crossed lovers who live in a world where humans and mystical beings are forced to cohabitate. Decider critic Meghan O’ Keefe said, “Carnival Row is just fun. It’s stupid, bizarre, beautiful, overwrought fun. It’s escapist fantasy at its most unhinged, and most sincere. For all of its faults, I have to love how much Carnival Row loves itself. It is a show that truly asks you to stop worrying and to learn to love faeries. So obviously, it’s not going to be for everyone, but bizarrely it seems that Carnival Row is for me.” Check out the rest of her review here.
