‘Elite’ on Netflix: Everything You Need to Remember Ahead of Season 2

Elite Season 2 is almost here! After becoming a scintillating sensation on Netflix last fall, the Spanish language soap opera is coming back Friday, September 6 for more secrets, lies, and spectacular parties.

Elite is a Spanish soap about three poor teens — Samuel, Christian, and Nadia — who earn scholarships to the most elite school in the country after shoddy construction causes their lower income high school to literally collapse. Once there, the three are immediately thrust into a complex world of parties, politics, drugs, sex, and money. The first student to befriend the trio is Marina, the troubled teen daughter of the very man who owns the construction company that screwed up their last school. By the end of Episode 1, we learn that Marina is the student who has been murdered at the pool. The rest of the season tracks how everything escalated to that point and reveals who actually murdered Marina.

Elite is more than a murder mystery. It’s a luxe teen soap opera with scandalous hookups, decadent parties, and dazzling fashion. Viewers might know who killed Marina, but almost none of the characters do. Elite Season 2 is going to be focused on exonerating Marina’s lover (and Samuel’s brother) Nano, but it’s also going to be about all those steamy hookups.

Who Killed Marina on Elite Season 1?

Ah ha, yes, the central mystery of Elite: who killed Marina? The powers that be believe it was Samuel’s brother, Nano. I mean, she did die in his arms, he had a criminal record, and in their last conversation, she had cold feet about running away to Morocco with him. It could have almost been Samuel. After all, he also was in love with Marina and desperately didn’t want her to leave. We even see him tensely holding her trophy — the murder weapon — in their last conversation at the pool.

However, neither Samuel nor Nano killed Marina.

Instead, rich boy Polo murdered her.

Why Was Marina Killed on Elite Season 1?

Polo killed Marina for two reasons, but they both had to do with a watch she and Nano had stolen from Carla, a marchioness’s daughter. Initially, Marina thought it would be a good idea for Nano to steal from her rich friends because, you know, they have a lot of expensive stuff and selling it could help get Nano out of trouble. However, Marina quickly learned from Carla that the watch was more than a watch. The watch was hiding a drive with a cache of documents that would ruin both Marina’s father and Carla’s. When Marina and Nano learn this, they hatch a daring plan to extort their friends for an incredible sum of money. Marina has just learned she is pregnant with Nano’s baby, and he wants to take her away so they can make a fresh start.

Carla is desperate to get the watch back from Marina and even tries to get Sebastian to help her steal it. However, it is her jilted boyfriend Polo who confronts Marina. When Marina resists, the two get into an altercation and Marina tells Polo that Carla is using him. Enraged, Polo hits her on the head with the statue and takes the watch.

Who Knows What Going into Elite Season 2?

The only people who know Polo killed Marina are Carla and her new beau Christian. Carla has sworn Christian to secrecy, which puts him in an odd place because his best friend Nano has taken the fall for the crime. The final scene of Elite Season 1 sees Samuel begging Christian to help him exonerate Nano. Christian answers Carla’s texts to meet him instead of revealing that the murder weapon is in the river they are standing by.

Who is Dating Whom at the Beginning of Elite Season 2?

  • Guzman and Lu have reconciled after Lu talked him down from a suicide attempt.
  • Guzman and Nadia still have feelings for one another, but Guzman promised Nadia’s father he would stay away to ensure she could return to school.
  • Carla and Christian are a couple.
  • Polo is still hung up on Carla, but it’s possible he is wrestling with his own sexuality.
  • Omar and Ander still love each other, but Omar’s father is setting him up with a proper Muslim wife.
  • Elsewhere, Samuel and Nano are still in mourning for Marina, whom they both loved.

Elite Season 2 premieres on Netflix Friday, September 6.
