‘Deadliest Catch’ Deckhand Suffers Gruesome Leg Injury on Season Finale

The fishermen of Deadliest Catch are used to working in harrowing conditions, but rarely do they actually put their lives on the line — until now. During Tuesday’s Deadliest Catch Season 15 finale, a deckhand’s leg was crushed by a 1,000 lb. steel pot, and the Coast Guard had to swoop in to perform a medevac rescue. While the deckhand ultimately made it out alive, graphic footage showed his leg bent 90 degrees in the wrong direction, resulting in a “gruesome spiral fracture of his fibula and tibia,” the show’s narrator revealed.

In the Deadliest Catch season finale, 25 knot winds and 10 foot swells created incredibly dangerous conditions for crew aboard crabbing vessels in the Bering Sea. “When the boat’s rolling around like this, this is just one of the most dangerous places in the planet to work,” explained Sean, skipper on another boat. After a large wave hit the Kari Marie, positioned north of Sean’s boat, a crab pot flew across the deck and hit a crew member, and his leg was crushed by the weight. A Coast Guard team was sent to rescue him, but their task was made more difficult by the whipping wind.

Finally, the rescuer made it to the injured deckhand, Cody, and his gruesome injury was revealed. Deadliest Catch‘s cameras showed Cody’s leg bent sideways, with his foot jutting out at a 90 degree angle from the rest of his body. The narrator explained that Cody “took the falling force of a 1,000 lb. steel crab pot to his left leg, twisting the flesh and bone, resulting in a gruesome spiral fracture of his fibula and tibia.” With the deckhand unable to walk, he was loaded onto a stretcher and “hoisted from the deck” by a Coast Guard helicopter.

Later, Cody recalled his injury. “We were dumping the pot and I’m in there picking crab out he went too far up and the dogs weren’t locked on and the pot flipped over. I tried running away and that’s how my leg is, like, bent,” he explained. “We had ten pots left, it was the end of the season. I was almost done.”
