Who Is Amber Ruffin? Everything to Know about Peacock’s Late Night Host

If you think you have a lot of TV to watch now, just wait until NBCUniversal launches Peacock next spring. Not only will the new platform be the exclusive home of beloved shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation, it’ll also come with a whoooooole bunch of original series. Ranging from a reboot of Battlestar Galactica to a revival of Saved By the Bell and an adaptation of Brave New World, there truly will be something for everyone on Peacock.

The streaming service is also getting into the late-night comedy game with a new show hosted by Amber Ruffin, the breakout writer/performer from NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers. And if you haven’t heard of Ruffin before today, now is the exact right time to go all-in on this energetic and fiercely funny comedian. Here’s everything you need to know about Amber Ruffin.

Who is Amber Ruffin?

Born in Nebraska, Ruffin’s comedy career actually kicked off when she moved to Chicago and began studying improv at the iO Theatre and The Second City. She even did comedy in the Netherlands as part of the influential international group Boom Chicago (alumni include Seth Meyers, Jordan Peele, Jason Sudeikis, Kay Cannon).

Ruffin auditioned to be a cast member on Saturday Night Live back in 2014 and while she didn’t get cast, she caught Seth Meyers attention. He hired her for his upcoming late night NBC show, and that is how Amber Ruffin became the first black woman to write for a late night show in American history. Her influence on the show quickly expanded past the writers’ room, as she became on-air talent for popular bits like “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” and “Amber Says What.”

While maintaining a relationship with Late Night, Ruffin’s appeared on other shows including Detroiters, Tuca and Bertie, and Drunk History. She also wrote on HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show.

Back to Late Night, here’s a sample of Ruffin’s delightful and insightful comedic skills.

What is The Amber Ruffin Show?

Well, we’re still waiting to find out! After all, the show isn’t debuting until April 2020 at the earliest. So far all we have is Peacock’s official log line, which reads:

Each week “The Amber Ruffin Show” will showcase Amber’s signature smart-and-silly take on the week. A late-night show with just the good parts – the comedy.

Really, the only thing we know for sure is that Ruffin will be involved. It’ll also probably be similar in tone to Late Night with Seth Meyers as the show will be produced by Meyers and Mike Shoemaker. Additionally, Ruffin’s “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” co-star Jenny Hagel is attached to the new show as a writer.

The Amber Ruffin Show will stream on Peacock in 2020.
