Not everyone in television felt honored at tonight’s Emmy Awards. When celebrity sisters and Keeping Up with the Kardashians stars Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner took to the 2019 Emmys stage to present the award for Outstanding Competition Programming, they introduced the transition from Comedy to Reality by describing the latter genre as presenting “real people just being themselves.” As the reality stars touted the authenticity of the genre that helped launch them, audience members began literally laughing at them.

While Kim Kardashian seemed unfazed by the ribbing, younger sister Kendall Jenner looked upset before launching into the nominees. Fans watching at home and those who were in the room noted the awkward moment on Twitter.

Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner are both known for their many lucrative projects, but they both first entered the public consciousness when their family starred together in E!’s Keeping up with the Kardashians, a show that is still running to this very day. However, the snickers from the audience suggest that the sisters’ contribution wasn’t as valued by the television industry as much as, say, Game of Thrones (which got its own unique special send off only about ten minutes later). Keeping up with the Kardashians wasn’t the first program of its ilk, but it has been undoubtedly influential on pop culture, if not also cable reality TV.

American Ninja Warrior, Nailed It!, The Amazing Race, The Voice, and Top Chef were all nominated for Outstanding Competition Programming, and the award eventually went to RuPaul’s Drag Race.
