Jessica Lange Says She Might Be Done With TV Acting For Good After Netflix’s ‘The Politician’

During a recent interview, famed actress Jessica Lange divulged that she might be done with TV acting for good after co-starring in Netflix’s The Politician and that it would take something “very different and special” for her to return. Her and her co-star Zoey Deutch also explained how their characters were not at all influenced by The Act as some viewers have alluded to.

The former American Horror Story mainstay recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter where she concluded that this might be the end of her career in television.

“It would take something very, very different and special to jump back into [series television]. Because at this point, I’m not sure I’m not finished,” she stated. “I might have come to the end of it,” she then clarified, adding a “maybe” to keep her declaration relatively vague.

In fact, one of the only reasons Lange signed on for The Politician was because she was not the leading actress and was able to take a step back: “I wasn’t carrying the whole show, so I might come in for a couple scenes an episode. It was a very easy schedule for me compared to the way I usually work,” she said.

As far as how Lange and Deutch’s characters take on their own form, Deutch had the following to say: “What was made very clear from the beginning is that this was going to be a show unlike anything else, and it would be okay if we were sometimes confused by the tone.”

“That’s fine,” she added. “That’s normal. Because it’s talking about very serious issues, about sexuality and gender and politics, but it’s a satire. It’s a comedy. So I just remember talking about that a lot and remembering that it’s a little bit more textured and different than just comedy/drama, black and white. Jessica and I, our world is in its own microcosm. It’s its own world.”

The show as a whole, however, is “talking about real stories, real issues, including gun control, voter fraud, complicated relationships between grandmothers and granddaughters,” said Deutch, “but they are fictional characters in this fictional universe. And that’s important to reiterate,” making it clear that The Politician stands on its own and did not borrow for any other show.

The Politician is now streaming on Netflix.
