Peaky Blinders Season 5 is finally here. After a two year wait, the British crime drama has returned, and it’s packing more intrigue, more danger, and more literal heat than ever before.
When Peaky Blinders debuted on the BBC in 2013, it was a different kind of period crime drama. Set in the underworld of 1919 Birmingham, the series focused on the loves and lies of the Shelby clan, a lower-class family of gangsters hoping for more in the years following the Great War. The Shelbys lead a gang called the Peaky Blinders, so called because their members hid razor blades in the peaks of their tweed caps. You know, to blind opponents in the middle of a fight. However, the Peaky Blinders’ true secret weapons were the family’s cunning leader Tommy (Cillian Murphy) and brilliant matriarch Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory).
Peaky Blinders was also one of the first British shows to find a home as a Netflix Original, making it a cult hit in the United States. Viewers were drawn to the show’s ruthless candor when it came to crime and poverty, and it didn’t hurt that showrunner Steven Knight paired each scene with a rock ‘n roll soundtrack. Over the years, famous faces like Tom Hardy, Adrian Brody, and Game of Thrones‘s Aidan Gillan have jockeyed for a gig on the series. This year, The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy and Hunger Games alum Sam Claflin join the mayhem on Peaky Blinders Season 5.
