Alex Trebek Roasts Boring ‘Jeopardy’ Contestants: “I’m So Glad This is Not a Friday Show”

Alex Trebek, go off. On Thursday night, the beloved Jeopardy host gave viewers a taste of his signature snark during a boring game filled with unanswered questions, low wagers, and quiet contestants. Trebek roasted the competitors all night long for their inability to answer certain categories, including a “Baseball Managers” topic that sat untouched for much of the round. “I’m so glad this is not a Friday show because I wouldn’t want to end the week with a low-scoring final,” said Trebek as they headed into Final Jeopardy. Absolutely savage.

According to Yahoo, Thursday’s Jeopardy episode saw more incorrect responses than usual. The categories seemed to stump the contestants: there were at least 10 instances in which no one responded, and all three Double Jeopardy questions went unanswered. The three contestants also left 9 clues on the board, a figure much higher than the 3.11 per episode average (according to The Jeopardy Fan’s analysis).

During the second round, they only answered one question in the “Baseball Managers” category, bringing out Trebek’s inner diva (we do so love her). “This isn’t going to be a repeat of the football category from last year, is it?” he said, referencing a February 2018 episode in which a “Talkin’ Football” category confounded the contestants. The round ended before Thursday’s contestants could further embarrass themselves. “Well, we’ll save the contestants,” joked Trebek.

Going into Final Jeopardy, the leading contestant, Kevin Boettcher, had only $5,600, and Trebek wasted no time before getting in another dig. “Low scores as we get set for Final Jeopardy. Not a big winner coming up,” said the beloved host. “I’m so glad this is not a Friday show because I wouldn’t want to end the week with a low-scoring final.”

When all was said and done, Boettcher walked away with $10,001, bringing his three-day total to $59,402. “We’ll see you tomorrow,” said Trebek before signing off. “The categories will be different, I promise.”
