Missing Helena on ‘The Great British Baking Show’? Watch ‘Christine McConnell’ on Netflix ASAP

Something is missing from today’s all-new episode of The Great British Baking Show on Netflix and her name is Helena Garcia. Helena — spooky, sassy, Halloween-loving Helena! — was unceremoniously cut from the tent in a shocking duel elimination. Helena had won the Technical, and won our hearts. What went wrong? (Personally, I think judge Prue Leith had it in for her, but that’s just one woman’s theory.)

The good news is Helena has a kindred spirit on Netflix. Last October, Netflix unleashed The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell onto the world. The kooky, spooky six-episode series was a mashup of Jim Henson creations and Christine McConnell’s own scary bakes. Like Helena, Christine McConnell is a goth obsessed with all things Halloween. However, unlike Helena, Christine McConnell got her own Netflix show where she got to date a serial killer, be friends with a ghost, and bake elaborate haunted houses.

The similarities between Christine McConnell and Helena Garcia are striking. Both are beautiful brunettes fond of crafting devilishly spooky delights. For McConnell, this can mean everything from a candy ouija board to bear claws that look like real claws. Garcia was introduced sewing bat wings onto her infant daughter’s onesie and baked everything from witches’ finger biscuits to a spider coming out of an egg.

What The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell feels like is that fun Helena vibe, but on steroids. The show is like falling into the psyche of our favorite goth baker, complete with werewolf friends and roadkill buddies. The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell is pure Helena (and pure Christine) without any of the literal judgment of Paul and Prue. The only hiccup? Like Helena’s run on The Great British Baking Show, The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell was cut short too soon. Netflix declined to renew it for a second season, much to our everlasting horror.

Nevertheless, you can still binge The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell as soon as you’re done watching the latest episode of The Great British Baking Show on Netflix, “Dessert Week.”
