Netflix may be out of the Marvel business, but that doesn’t mean they’re done with superheroes. Instead, the streaming service is launching a new hero of their very own–and he’s an eight-year-old boy named Dion.
Raising Dion is a new Netflix series that takes a different approach to telling the superhero origin story, focusing on the hero-to-be’s elementary school years and the struggles his single mother goes through to raise him and keep him safe. The series comes from executive producer Michael B. Jordan, who also has a part to play in the highly anticipated series. But what is Raising Dion about and who else is in the cast? What is Raising Dion on Netflix about?
A new take on the superhero mythology, Raising Dion doesn’t just skip over the hero’s childhood. This Netflix original shows what it’s like to actually raise a kid with superpowers, hence the title Raising Dion. When her eight-year-old son suddenly displays a range of superpowers that he doesn’t know how to control, widowed mother Nicole tries every way possible to keep her son safe and teach him how to use his mysterious new abilities. But where did those powers come from, and what will happen when the wrong people find out what Dion can do? Those are the questions this new superhero origin will ask.
Who is in the Raising Dion cast?
Newcomer Ja’Siah Young makes his big debut playing Dion, the titular 8-year-old superhero. Alisha Wainwright (Shadowhunters) plays his mother Nicole, and executive producer Michael B. Jordan (Creed) has a recurring role as Dion’s father Mark. Jason Ritter (Another Period) plays Dion’s godfather Pat, and Jazmyn Simon (Ballers) plays Nicole’s sister Kat. Rounding out the cast are Sammi Haney, who plays Dion’s classmate and potential BFF Esperanza, and Ali Ahn (Billions) who plays the head of a research facility.
Raising Dion was originally published as an independent comic book by filmmaker Dennis Liu. He even produced a trailer for the project back in 2015.
