No character has changed more on Riverdale than FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich). He started in jail, led gang the Southside Serpents, and always seemed to be running afoul of the law. But as of Season 4, FP is now sheriff of Riverdale, and father to two kids: Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), and Jellybean Jones (Trinity Likins).

Actually, make that three kids. As revealed in the Season 3 finale, Charles Smith (Wyatt Nash), FP’s long thought dead son with Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick) is very much alive, and back in town. Not only that, he’s an FBI agent who has been working with Alice to take down villainous cult The Farm. FP didn’t even know Charles existed until Season 2, when Alice revealed to him that Charles had died. But now that he’s not only alive, but very much back in FP’s life, how will the former gang-leader react?

“You know, that’s… It’s hard to answer that without giving some stuff away, but it’s unique,” Ulrich told Decider at New York Comic Con. “It’s kind of not what you’d expect.”

Certainly, FP will have to deal with Charles in some way, as he’ll be sticking around Riverdale for the time being. Further complicating matters? As revealed at the show’s New York Comic Con panel, after The Farm storyline is resolved in episode three, Alice and Betty (Lili Reinhart) will be living under one roof with the Jones family. Given FP and Alice are very much in love, as are Betty and Jughead, it’s going to lead to a pretty bizarre situation for a guy who used to deal with stress by getting wasted and riding off on his motorcycle.

“I think it’s an issue we’ll deal with going forward,” Ulrich said. “Fighting his very nature… I think deep down he wants this to exist, and wants this to happen, but sometimes we just, it’s not within us.”

The complications for FP don’t stop there, either. Though casting has yet to be announced, one of the central mysteries of the first half of the season concerns FP’s father, the first Forsythe Pendleton. He’ll be returning in the midseason finale, and it seems like when it comes to FP, he doesn’t have the best of intentions at heart. “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” FP noted on the panel. Given the last time FP talked about his father, he told Jughead his grandfather had died drinking before he was 50, sounds like FP won’t be so happy that tree is back in town, either.

Riverdale returns to The CW on Wednesday, October 9 at 8/7c.
