No, ‘Song of the South’ Will Not Be on Disney Plus

Disney+ is a month away from launching and we already know a whole lot about what will be on the streaming service. There are over 600 movies and TV show titles coming to the platform, including a whole lot of animated classics, Star Wars films, Marvel cartoons, and whatever the hell Fuzzbucket is. There’s one movie that will not be on Disney+, and that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise: no, you will not be able to stream Song of the South on Disney+.

While you will be able to stream obscure animated features like Saludos Amigos and Fun and Fancy Free and live-action films like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes and Darby O’Gill and the Little People, you won’t find Song of the South, the (incredibly racist) 1946 film that marries animation with live-action on Disney+.

This news made headlines back in April, when it was reported that the expansive service wouldn’t include the controversial film. Not only that, but the racist parts of the 1941 animated feature Dumbo will be edited out when the film makes the jump to Disney+.

For those that only know Song of the South as a reference to racist AF pop culture of the past, the film is based on a collection of stories from a white Southern author named Joel Chandler Harris which were written from the point of view of a Black character named Uncle Remus in the late 1800s. So, how racist is Song of the South? It’s based on a white guy from 19th century Georgia’s take on Black people. That’s how racist it is. It’s by far the most controversial film Disney’s ever released in theaters, and it has never been released for home video purchase in the United States.

The Disney film is set on a Georgia plantation during the Reconstruction Era and stars James Baskett as Uncle Remus. Baskett received an honorary Oscar for his performance. The film also won the Best Original Song Oscar for “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” which is one of the few parts of Song of the South that hasn’t been scrubbed from Disney canon. That tune pops up everywhere, as do some of the film’s animated characters. Br’er Bear, Br’er Rabbit, and Br’er Fox have popped up every now and then over the decades in various Disney specials and video games. There are plenty of ways to hear “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” without watching Song of the South!

Disney+ launches on November 12.
