Billie Lourd Honors Mom Carrie Fisher With Beautiful Cover of “American Girl”

Billie Lourd honored what would have been her mother Carrie Fisher‘s 63rd birthday with a beautiful acoustic cover of one of her mom’s all-time favorite songs: Tom Petty’s “American Girl.” The actress and singer took to Instagram to share this moment with fans, remarking, “I like to celebrate her by doing things that she loved to do.”

Carrie Fisher is one of the most beloved figures in cinematic history, but perhaps no one loved her or misses her quite like her daughter, Billie Lourd. The actress famously called Fisher, “Momby,” and she honored her Momby’s birthday in a special way.

“Today would have been my Momby’s 63rd birthday,” she wrote. “Not that I’m some kind of grief expert by any means, but on milestones (or whatever you want to call them) like this, I like to celebrate her by doing things that she loved to do. So here’s a little video of me singing one of her favorite songs (American girl by Tom petty) in one of her favorite places (her bathtub of course).”

Lourd made her screen debut opposite her mother in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and has seen her career sky rocket since then with a scene-stealing role in Booksmart and a number of Ryan Murphy projects. Fisher tragically died of sudden cardiac arrest in December 2016.

Lourd wrote on the post, “I’ll probably have a pint of vanilla Haggen Dazs and a Coca Cola for dinner,” before adding a red heart emoji.

You can watch the full song on IGTV. Lourd is currently starring in American Horror Story: 1984 and will reprise her role as Resistance Lieutenant Connix in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
