‘RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race’ Event Series Coming to VH1

The RuPaul-iverse continues to expand with the launch of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and upcoming spinoffs set in Canada and Australia, and now there’s another bright star in the Drag Race sky: RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race.

That’s right, Celebrity Drag Race! The new series was announced by RuPaul announced while on a panel at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit. “Doing drag does not change who you are, it reveals who you are,” said RuPaul in the accompanying press release. “I can’t wait for the world to see what happens when our celebrity contestants get all up in drags!”

RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race has been greenlit by VH1 and will arrive sometime in 2020. The series, a four-episode event, will take 12 celebrity contestants and get them all done up in drag as they compete for the title of America’s Next Celebrity Drag Superstar. Three celebrities will be featured in each episode. The celebs will also be competing for prize money that will go to a charity of their choosing.

Knowing that drag is a hard art form to dive into, the show has enlisted a killer lineup of all-star queens to help the celebs get sickening. The list of Drag Race alum appearing on the show includes Alyssa Edwards, Trixie Mattel, Bob the Drag Queen, Kim Chi, Trinity the Tuck, Asia O’Hara, Monet X Change, Monique Heart, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, and Nina West.

The concept of the show feels like a fabulous extension of the parent show’s makeover challenge, which is always a standout episode and has been responsible for some of the best and wildest moments in Drag Race herstory. Building a whole show around getting a newbie–this time a celeb!–into drag for the first time seems like a sure bet for the franchise.

The new series does not yet have a premiere date and details about the celebrity cast are coming soon. In the meantime, you can get your weekly drag fix via RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, which airs weekly through the end of November. Following that, new seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and RuPaul’s Drag Race will air back-to-back on VH1 starting either later this year or early 2020.
