‘Hocus Pocus’ Sequel Officially in the Works at Disney Plus

Bubble, bubble, your streaming queue is about to be in trouble. On Wednesday night, Collider reported that Disney+ is officially developing a Hocus Pocus sequel film with Workaholics writer and producer Jen D’Angelo. Hocus Pocus 2 is reportedly still in its early stages, but sources close to production say that Disney is “hopeful” that original stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy will be involved in some way.

According to Collider’s Jeff Sneider, D’Angelo is spearheading the effort to bring Hocus Pocus back to the screen. The writer/producer has signed on to write the script, and she has “been tasked with finding a way to bring back” the original 1993 trio. Midler, Parker, and Najimy have yet to commit, but sources tell Collider that Disney is “hopeful that they’ll be involved with the sequel in some capacity,” whether that means reprising their main character roles or making a cameo to introduce new group of witches.

The original Hocus Pocus starred Midler, Parker, and Najimy as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson, three witch sisters who have been cursed since the Salem, Massachusetts witch trials in the late 17th century. 300 years later, a boy mistakenly resurrects Winifred, Sarah, and Mary, and the witches are forced to adjust to modern-day life. Directed by Kenny Ortega — who went on to direct High School Musical, multiple Gilmore Girls episodes, Disney’s Descendants, and more — Hocus Pocus performed poorly a the box office, but it later became a cult classic and a Halloween staple on networks like Freeform, ABC, and Disney.

Disney has yet to set a release date for Hocus Pocus 2 (or announce any additional information), but keep your fingers crossed that the sequel debuts in time for next Halloween. Until then, you can get your Sanderson sisters fix on Freeform, where the 1993 film will be airing throughout the monthHocus Pocus will also be available to stream on Disney+ when the service launches on November 12.
