Who’s Who in ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’s’ First Ever Snatch Game

You can’t have a great season of RuPaul’s Drag Race without a Snatch Game! RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is, without a doubt, a great season of Drag Race, and this gorgeous spinoff served up a Snatch Game for the ages.

Snatch Game is always the biggest challenge in a Drag Race season, as the remaining queens not only trot out their best celebrity impersonations, but also try to make RuPaul laugh. You gotta serve a look and an attitude and one-liners all at once? It’s the gag of the season!

It also wouldn’t be a Snatch Game without a healthy dose of “who?” Every season, there’s always one or two celebs that go right over the viewers’ heads–usually because they’re too young (what’s with all these Insta-lebrity nail techs?) or too old (never forget Little Edie!). The UK iteration tosses in another variable, as our friends across the pond have a whole different pop culture eco-system. While some of the UK queens chose people that Americans will be familiar with, there were a couple that might make you wonder. For the culturally curious, here’s a rundown of who each queen played and where you can watch them (or Meryl Streep playing them) in action.

Who is Stacey Dooley? Who is Lorraine Kelly?

Our celebrity contestants for the UK “Snatch Game” certainly delighted the queens with their presence, but all of us in the States were left with a big question mark. Here’s what you need to know about Stacey Dooley and Lorraine Kelly.

As Ru mentioned in her intro, Stacey Dooley is an investigative journalist most known for her long-running show Stacey Dooley Investigates. Her other projects include Stacey Dooley in the USA and Show Me What You’re Made Of. But her career isn’t all hard-hitting docu-series; she also won 2018’s Strictly Come Dancing (the UK’s Dancing With the Stars). For her broadcasting work, Dooley was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2018.

Lorraine Kelly was one of the original hosts of the morning news show GMTV, a gig she held from 1993 to 2010. She followed that up with the simultaneous launches of the morning show Daybreak and her entertainment chat show Lorraine in 2010. Lorraine is still a fixture of UK television to this day. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2012 for her charity endeavors and work with the armed forces.

Who is Julia Child?

While Divina de Campo’s Julia Child was just fine, at least she did a better job than Milk did in Drag Race Season 6. Child is one of the most important figures in the world of cooking. Not only is she credited with bringing French cuisine to America in 1961 with her book Mastering the Art of French Cooking, she also helped bring cooking to television with her show The French Chef. If you’re a fan of Top Chef, then you gotta thank The French Chef. Oh–and Child served in the Office of Strategic Services in World War II where she developed a shark repellent to keep them away from bombs meant for German U-boats. Child’s life was dramatized in the 2009 film Julie & Julia where the legend was played by another legend, Meryl Streep.

Of course proud Essex queen Cheryl Hole chose Gemma Collins for “Snatch Game.” Collins is a British reality star, having starred on the hit series The Only Way Is Essex for 9 straight years (and 234 episodes!). Prior to joining the cast, Collins worked as a used car salesperson. After joining the cast, she’s popped up on a number of UK reality shows, including Celebrity Big Brother and Dancing on Ice. She currently has her own reality show, Gemma Collins: Diva Forever.

Who is Donald Trump?

Don’t you wish we lived in a world where one could seriously ask “Who is Donald Trump?”

Who is Margaret Thatcher?

Divina and Baga Chipz fought over who got to be ol’ Maggie Thatcher, with Baga winning out and scoring Divina’s much better outfit in the process. Thatcher served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990, becoming the first woman to hold that office. Her nickname was the Iron Lady, a moniker given to her by a Russian journalist and subsequently stuck. It stuck so well that the 2011 biopic used that as its title (she was, of course, played by Meryl Streep). As evidenced by Baga’s snarly impression and answers, the conservative Thatcher is a controversial figure in UK politics. She was traditional in every sense of the word, and regularly attacked everything from horror movies to the “promotion” of homosexuality.

Who is Rue McClanahan?

As the only queen without a strong English accent, the Canadian Crystal chose to take on TV’s most iconic Southern belle, Blanche Devereaux (a.k.a. actress Rue McClanahan, the name Ru guided Crystal towards during the walk through to most likely avoid any copyright issues). McClanahan is most known for playing the frisky and flirtatious Blanche on The Golden Girls, but the beloved sitcom was far from her first foray into TV. She previously appeared on the shows Maude (where she first worked with Bea Arthur) and the first seasons of Mama’s Family.

Who is Mary Berry?

Blu Hydrangea’s questionable use of a hump and filthy innuendo aside, she definitely looked and sounded like British TV personality Mary Berry. Netflix subscribers will definitely recognize the proper and polite Berry as one of the original judges on the reality competition show The Great British Baking Show (known as The Great British Bake Off in the UK). She brought her wisdom to that show for its first 7 series. She now hosts her own show, Mary Berry’s Quick Cooking.

Who is Sir David Attenborough?

Sum Ting Wong kinda nailed the look of a 93-year-old Englishman? She certainly did sound like Sir David Attenborough. That’s really the most important thing, as people all over the globe are familiar with Attenborough’s signature cadence thanks to his many, many narration jobs. With close to 60 years of narration credits to his name, Attenborough’s given his voice to projects like Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Frozen Planet, and countless other nature documentaries.

But Sir David Attenborough wasn’t Sum Ting Wong’s first choice. She almost did Nigella Lawson.

Who is Nigella Lawson?

Nigella Lawson is a major name in the UK’s food culture, having hosted a bunch of cooking shows including Nigella Bites, the talk show Nigella, and Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen. Food Network addicts will definitely remember Lawson from her 2006 series Nigella Feasts.
