Meghan McCain Isn’t Surprised by Harvey Weinstein’s Enablers: “There Are Women Who Will Marry Charlie Manson”

For once, the women of The View are heading into the weekend on relatively good terms. On Friday morning, all five women found themselves in agreement during a discussion about Harvey Weinstein, who was called out for attending a private event in downtown Manhattan this week. The View‘s co-hosts praised a comedian who bravely confronted Weinstein — who is awaiting trial on multiple counts of rape and sexual abuse — during her set, although Sunny Hostin seemed shocked that the disgraced mogul “still has enablers” surrounding him. “There are women who will marry Charlie Manson and date O.J. Simpson,” replied Meghan McCain. “So, like, we shouldn’t be surprised.”

On Thursday, comedian Kelly Bachman shared a video of a set she performed at an Actors’ Hour event on Wednesday night, which was attended by Weinstein and a small group of friends. In her set, Bachman called out the accused rapist (he has denied all allegations) directly, saying, “I didn’t know we had to bring our own Mace and rape whistles to Actors’ Hour.” Someone in the audience booed her, to which she responded, “This kills at group therapy for rape survivors.” Another event attendee, Zoe Stuckless posted a video of themselves confronting Weinstein at his table. “Nobody’s going to say anything?” Stuckless asks, pointing at Weinstein. “I’m going to stand four feet from a fucking rapist and nobody is going to say anything?”

Both videos immediately went viral, and by Friday, the controversy had made its way to The View. Abby Huntsman insisted that if she had been at the event, she “would have to look for the closest exit,” while Joy Behar insisted that “he went because he’s shameless.” Added the longtime View co-host, “He might as well have just shown up at Gloria Steinem’s house.”

Hostin then read a lengthy legal note about Weinstein’s case, as well as a statement from his spokesperson, who said that the situation was “uncalled for, downright rude and an example of how due process today is being squashed by the public.” While she noted that the disgraced film mogul “is innocent until proven guilty,” she said that “anyone who’s read Ronan Farrow’s work knows” the truth. “But what about the guys that were at his table? What about the people that were yelling, ‘Shut up?'” asked Hostin. “Those are the enablers,” replied Behar. Hostin agreed, saying, “He still has the enablers. He still has these folks around him.”

“There are women who will marry Charlie Manson and date O.J. Simpson,” said McCain, speaking up for the first time. “So, like, we shouldn’t be surprised.”

The conservative co-host attempted to carry on, but The View‘s music started to play, cutting her off. McCain glared at producers off-screen before saying, “Just forget it. It’s fine.” She halfheartedly joked that “it’s the Oscars,” as the award show’s producers are notorious for wrapping up speeches early. After very awkward silence, Whoopi Goldberg had no choice but to throw the show to commercial. At least it was a bonding moment for the co-hosts?
