‘The Great British Bake Off’ Judge Paul Hollywood’s Diabetes Joke Cut From Episode Amidst Backlash

The creators of hit series The Great British Bake Off, which is also known as The Great British Baking Show to Netflix users in the U.S., have decided to cut a joke about diabetes that judge Paul Hollywood made during the Season 10 semi-final episode following backlash it received after airing on Channel 4.

Love Productions (owned by Comcast-backed Sky), has deleted the distasteful joke from any future airings of the episode on Channel 4. According to Deadline, the joke has been permanently removed and will not be available on Netflix in the U.S. either.

During the episode, which had broadcast this past Tuesday, judge Paul Hollywood described a contestant’s “Chelsea Buns” as “diabetes on a plate.” The comment sent diabetics on social media into an uproar, with many claiming that the comment reinforced the myth that diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar.

Charity Diabetes UK tweeted: “We’ve been in touch with the producers and @Channel4 to explain how remarks like this can lead to misunderstanding, and be upsetting for people affected by diabetes.”

Hollywood apologized for the remark on Instagram, saying it was “thoughtless” and that he meant no harm. Diabetes UK added that Love Productions is going to educate its staff on the disease and how to talk about it in order to avoid a similar incident in the future.
