Bruce Springsteen Blasts Donald Trump On ‘CBS This Morning’ For Not Knowing What It Is To Be American

This week on CBS This Morning, “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen appeared for an interview to promote his Western Stars concert film, which debuted on Friday in theaters. While speaking about the film, Gayle King asked Bruce about Donald Trump’s comments about him, to which he blasted the president for not knowing what it is to be American.

While making his rounds on both late and early shows alike, The Boss has been talking politics, a subject he’s been actively involved in before even campaigning for Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, as well as endorsing former President Barack Obama and playing at his inauguration.

His contributions to those campaigns caught Trump’s attention, who mentioned during a 2016 rally that he “didn’t need little Bruce Springsteen and all of these people” to excite his fan base during his initial presidential run. Springsteen said he was not surprised.

“The stewardship of the nation has been thrown away to somebody who doesn’t have a clue as to what that means,” Springsteen said during the interview, which aired on Thursday. “And unfortunately, we have somebody who I feel doesn’t have a grasp of the deep meaning of what it means to be an American.”

Springsteen, however, like many Democrats at this point, conceded that Trump will likely win reelection in 2020. In an earlier interview, during his Western Stars circuit, he told the Sunday Times of London that no Democratic candidates have made a strong case to beat Trump.

“I don’t see anyone out there at the moment … the man who can beat Trump, or the woman who can beat Trump,” Springsteen said. “You need someone who can speak some of the same language [as Trump] … and the Democrats don’t have an obvious, effective presidential candidate.”
