New Movies on Demand: ‘The Farewell,’ ‘Dora and the Lost City of Gold,’ ‘Peanut Butter Falcon,’ and More

Cheers to the freakin’ weekend! This week we saw a lot of changes in our day-to-day life: wintry decorations were put out, the Starbucks cups are now festive, and (in our case) the Rockefeller Center skating rink is up and running. With all of these combined, you know what that means: the holiday season is (un)officially upon us! And it looks like Mother Nature is taking that cue because a serious drop in temperature also came with the man-made changes. But not to worry, cold weather just makes your want to stay inside all weekend that more justifiable! And whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a ton of new movies that came out this week for you to hunker down with.

Among the new movies to buy and rent this weekend are a few sleeper hits that are itching to grace your home screens: the emotional dramedy The Farewell starring Awkwafina and the live-action adventure film Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Also available on home video this weekend isThe Peanut Butter Falcon: the engaging tale of a kid with Down Syndrome who runs away from his residential nursing home to follow his dream to become a pro wrestler. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson and introducing Zack Gottsagen, this action-drama film is sure to tug at your heartstrings. And if you are not in the mood to make a long-term commitment (but we will revisit those commitment issues later, Scott!), then you’re in luck because Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, The Kitchen and The Art of Racing in the Rain are now available to rent.

Curious about what else is out there? Check out what other dramas, thrillers and adventure films you can buy or rent this week.

The Farewell

People tend to associate actress and rapper Awkwafina with comedy movies and funny cameos, but in The Farewell, she finally proves to the world her true range as a professional actress. The Farewell is a dramedy film about a Chinese family who, upon finding out that their beloved matriarch has only a few weeks to live, schedule a fake wedding so they can say goodbye before the passes. The only problem is, however, that the Grandmother has no idea she is even sick. Awkwafina stars as Billi, a young woman in the family who struggles with her family’s decision to keep her grandma in the dark. This emotional, funny and heartfelt story about love and family is the perfect platform for Awkwafina to stretch her wings and show off what she can really do, and she does so brilliantly in The Farewell.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold

This ain’t the Dora you’re used to. In Dora and the Lost City of Gold, our favorite little adventurer — and her backpack, of course — is leaving the jungle and taking on her biggest adventure yet: high school. But high school troubles do not last long after a field trip gone awry pulls Dora back into the world of the jungle; but this time, she has a group of teenage peers unwittingly accompanying her. But with her best friend Boots by her side and cousin Diego to assist her, Dora embarks on a quest to save her parents and solve the impossible mystery behind the lost city of gold. Starring Isabela Moner (Instant Family), Eva Longoria, Michael Peña and more Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a live-action adventure film that even the generation that grew up on Dora will surely enjoy.

The Impossible

Many people think that British up-and-coming actor Tom Holland first swung onto the scene as Spider-Man. However, many people do not know that Holland actually made his acting debut in J.A. Bayona’s stunning film, The Impossible.  Based on the true story of María Belón and her family, The Impossible is an adventure-disaster film that follows a young family vacationing in Thailand who are suddenly uprooted and faced with disaster after the infamous 2004 Boxing day tsunami. Starring Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts and young Tom Holland, this movie is a gut-wrenching exploration of perseverance and just how far a family will go to survive and stay together.
