Wait, Is ‘Liar Liar’ REALLY Leaving Hulu On November 30th?

In March of 1997, the comedy Liar Liar, a film so nice they named it twice, sashayed its way into both theaters and the hearts of moviegoers. Starring Jim Carrey, Maura Tierney, and an amorphous sorcery that’s never really explained, the movie follows a lawyer, Carrey’s Fletcher Reede, who’s forced to tell the truth for 24 hours after his son Max makes a birthday wish that prevents his dad from lying. Is this a colossal waste of a birthday wish? Sure. Why is Max’s wish granted? No idea. All you really need to know is that Liar Liar is 86 minutes of pure Jim Carrey tomfoolery.

Earlier this month, Hulu announced that Liar Liara film the Minneapolis Star Tribune predicted would “make a liar out of those who predicted that Carrey’s career was on the skids” (emphasis mine to help sell the joke) — would be leaving the service on November 30.

Counterpoint: Is it?

Liar Liar is famously about lying (lying). Back in February, Hulu tried to convince us that Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard had the phrase “Hulu Has Live Sports” tattooed on his forearm. Could promoting Liar Liar’s departure be the first step in a cunning ploy to attract mainstream media attention for Jim Carrey’s sixth most popular film? This is a fair — and more importantly not stupid — question. Sheep follow the herd, while a lion… doesn’t… do that. I’m the lion in this scenario.

I decided to get to the bottom of this pop culture mystery.

STEP 1: ASK HULU

If I learned one thing in journalism school, it’s that I’m unable to retain information. But if repeatedly watching The Newsroom has taught me anything, it’s that a good journalist needs two sources and that quixotic New York media professionals have a real boner for the Spanish novel “Don Quixote.”

I decided to email the Hulu media account.

I did not receive a response. Left with no other alternatives, I was forced to…

STEP 2: HAVE A CHAT WITH HULUBOT

According to the Hulu website, HuluBot is an automated system used to answer common questions. I’m generally weary of both robots and snakes — the former because I assume they will one day lead to the extinction of all mankind and the latter because they’re icky — but I decided to give Robo-Hulu a chance.

I didn’t have the heart to tell this well-meaning robotic idiot that it was absolutely zero help. Crestfallen but feeling slightly more optimistic about the inevitable robot apocalypse, I decided to take my question to the top of the food chain.

STEP 3: MAYBE JIM CARREY WILL HELP?

Nope.

STEP 4: GET A NORMIE TO GO UNDERCOVER

It was becoming increasingly obvious that Hulu wouldn’t talk to me, the crackerjack reporter behind ground-breaking stories like “How To Watch The 2017 MTV VMAS,” “Here’s How I Tried To Flip ‘The Cutting Edge’ From Rotten to Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes,” and “How To Watch The 2018 MTV VMAS.

Faced with no other option, I enlisted the help of my friend, Joe DiBella, a normie.

Asked and answered.

Well, there you have it, folks. I guess we have our answer. Liar Liar is officially leaving Hulu on Saturday, November 30.

OR IS IT? I had one more ace up my sleeve. Who’s the first person that comes to mind when you hear the term “’90s courtroom shenanigans”? Say it with me now: One, two, three…

STEP 5: REACH OUT TO KATO KAELIN ON TWITTER

Kato Kaelin is not a fan of being asked about the film Liar Liar

Personally, this feels like a vast overreaction to a simple question, but fair enough, Kato. Fair enough. Happy Thanksgiving!
