Will There Be a ‘Holiday Rush 2’?

While you were eating Thanksgiving dinner, Netflix was celebrating Christmas with the latest straight-to-streaming holiday movie, Holiday Rush, which debuted on Thanksgiving day. Written by Sean Dwyer and Greg Cope White and directed by Leslie Small, this comedy stars Romany Malco as a No. 1 radio DJ on the top of his game, until the station decides to unceremoniously cut him and his partner Roxy Richardson (Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green) loose. His kids, who have gotten used to living a cushy life full of expensive gifts, must learn to adjust to life in a lower tax bracket—and a smaller house. And, of course, this shift comes at the most expensive time of year: Christmas.

Like all the Netflix Christmas movies, Holiday Rush follows a fairly predictable formula, but, as Decider’s Brett White noted in his review, Martin-Green and Malco’s on-screen chemistry make it a charming and enjoyable practicable formula. No, it’s not quite The Irishman, but when the credits roll on Holiday Rush, you’ll find yourself wanting more. But will that happen? Is there a Holiday Rush 2 in the stars? Read on to find out.

Will there be a Holiday Rush 2? Will there be a Holiday Rush sequel?

There has not been an official announcement for a Holiday Rush sequel yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if a Holiday Rush 2 is announced in the near future. Netflix famously does not reveal its ratings on a regular basis, but based on social media and Google Trends, Holiday Rush has been a success for the streaming service.

Writers Dwyer and Cope wrapped up (pun intended) most of the loose ends of the plot: As soon as the family adjusts to life with less luxury and accepts Roxy as a new mother figure, Rush gets their old house back. Not only that, but he also gets his old job back at the radio station. Basically, everything is perfect and nothing hurts. Then ’60s pop star Darlene Love (who plays Aunt Jo) sings a musical number to close it out. And no, there is no Holiday Rush after-credits scene like there was for last week’s Netflix Christmas film, A Knight Before Christmas.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways into a potential sequel. Now that Rush’s son Jamal (actor Amarr M. Wooten) has been accepted into Harvard, we could see a Holiday Rush sequel focused on his adventures at college. Call it Holiday Rush a Fraternity. You can have that one for free, Netflix.
