Woman Crush Wednesday: Elizabeth Perkins Will Put You in a Good Moody This Holiday Season

It’s the first week of December and what better way to celebrate this joyous, festive season than to recognize a new Woman Crush Wednesday? This week, we’re talking about an actress who has rocked roles both Big and sm(All I Want). Everybody give it up for the wonderful Elizabeth Perkins!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Elizabeth Perkins

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Perkins is starring alongside Denis Leary, Jay Baruchel, Francois Arnaud, and Chelsea Frei in the American adaptation of 2014 Australian comedy television series, The Moodys. Perkins plays perfectionist, wine-loving Ann Moody, who, with her husband Sean Moody Sr. (Leary) reunite with their three adult children (Baruchel, Arnaud, Frei) in Chicago for the Christmas season. The Moodys are a slightly dysfunctional family attempting to have the “perfect” holiday, and in doing so, hilarity ensues in the form of break-ups, arrests, and five eccentric personalities living together under one roof.

The American version of The Moodys is a three-night, six-episode sitcom that will begin airing its first two episodes tonight on FOX  at 9pm, with episodes three and four airing December 9, and then the final two episodes airing December 10th. These first six episodes will follow the Moody family through Christmas, with the potential for future seasons to be set during other family milestones.

Perkins recently told the Chicago Tribune that The Moodys is “a realistic look at a very chaotic family, with all the tension that tends to bring.” Additionally, the show is already receiving positive reviews, with the Chicago Sun-Times giving it 3.4 out of 4 stars, calling it “a sharp, breezy, insightful, mildly cynical but ultimately warmhearted family comedy/drama.” The Sun-Times went on to praise Perkins’s performance and her “comfortable, warm, and funny rapport” with Leary. With reviews like that, it’s no wonder why we can’t wait to spend our holidays with Perkins and the Moody family!

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Perkins has graced screens both big and small throughout her career, starting out hot with the role of Joan in 1986 film About Last Night. From there, she went on to play Tom Hanks’s love interest, Susan Lawrence, in the 1988 hit film Big, Wilma Flinstone — the wife of Fred, played by John Goodman — in the live-action 1994 film adaption of beloved cartoon, The Flintstones, and voiced Coral, the mom of Nemo and wife of Marlin, in the 2004 hit animated Pixar film, Finding Nemo. Perkins has also accrued quite the credit list on television, most recently appearing in episodes of This Is UsGLOW, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Sharp Objects (for which she was nominated as “Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Miniseries” in the 2019 Critics’ Choice Television Awards).

Most notably, however, Perkins starred as image-obsessed suburban housewife Celia Hodes in the first five seasons of critically acclaimed Showtime dramedy, Weeds. Perkins’s hard work playing Hodes earned her positive reviews and attention, culminating in three Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe award nominations for “Best Supporting Role in a Series”. With this impressive history of film and television success, there’s no doubt that Perkins will continue her great work on-screen for many years to come.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: So you’ve watched all of The Moodys and are hoping for more Perkins to get you through your holidays. Well, you’re in luck! She is starring in upcoming Apple TV+ drama, Truth Be Told, in which she plays Melanie Cave, mother of Warren (Aaron Paul). The show revolved around true crime podcaster Poppy Parnell (Octavia Spencer) who is called to investigate the case of convicted serial killer, Warren. The show’s first three episodes will premier on December 6th. Additionally, there is set to be a Weeds sequel series coming out next year, called Weeds 4.20. While Perkins’s involvement has not yet been confirmed, she has expressed her interest in reprising her role as Celia Hodes in it, so fingers crossed that we get to see more of Perkins killing it in Weeds and many more shows and movies in the New Year!
