Netflix is starting off 2020 with a bang thanks to its upcoming series Messiah. The drama follows a man who mysteriously appears in the Middle East. As he starts to develop a larger and larger cult following the world starts to wonder, is this the second coming of Christ?

Messiah is poised to be the first major drama of the new year. To prep you for this upcoming Michelle Monaghan-starring series, here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Messiah About?

Created by Michael Petroni, the series revolves around a man who appears in the Middle East claiming to be the Jesus or Mahdi of his time. His increasing miracles gain him a cult following, but not everyone is as convinced that this man is as holy as he says. As doubts around him increases, CIA officer Eva Geller becomes dedicated to discovering the truth behind this figure.

Who’s in Messiah‘s Cast on Netflix?

Michelle Monaghan and Mehdi Dehbi lead this religiously fueled drama. Monaghan is best known for starring in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Made of Honor, Eagle Eye, True Detective, and Hulu’s The Path. Prior to starring in Messiah, Dehbi has starred in The Other Son, Mary Queen of Scots, and A Most Wanted Man.

The series also stars comedian Tomer Sisley, Fast & Furious star John Ortiz, Melinda Page Hamilton (Desperate Housewives and Mad Men), Stefania LaVie Owen (The Carrie Diaries), and Jane Adams (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Minds, Frasier, and Hung).

Is There a Trailer for Messiah?

There certainly is. You can check it out in all of its cult-inspiring drama above.

When Does Messiah Premiere on Netflix?

Messiah‘s 10-episode first season premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, January 1, 2020. So if you want to start off this new year with some religious intrigue, you’re all set.

What’s the Deal with Messiah and Dajjal?

After Messiah‘s trailer first premiered, some Netflix users were quick to make a connection between its premise and the name of one of its main characters. And that connection may be this series’ big twist. Possible spoilers ahead.

As ScreenRant noted, at one point during Messiah‘s casting stage Dehbi’s character was allegedly named al-Masih ad-Dajjal. In Islamic theology, that name refers to a false prophet or the antichrist, more or less. Even though Dehbi’s character name is currently listed as Al-Massih, this possible change caused some people on Twitter to wonder if Messiah was ramping up to an antichrist twist. Either way all the attention this conspiracy theory is getting isn’t hurting Messiah one bit.
