There are dozens of Oscar-bait films hitting theaters and streaming services this week, and then there’s Jumanji: The Next Level. Technically the third film in the Jumanji franchise, this is the second sequel to 1995’s Jumanji, and the first sequel to 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which rebooted the beloved Robin Williams film with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. Despite the silly premise—four kids get sucked into the world of a video game and become their chosen players—Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle received mostly positive reviews. More importantly, the film absolutely killed it at the box office, becoming the fifth-highest grossing film of 2017. No wonder, then, that there’s a sequel hitting theaters this weekend, on December 13: Jumanji: The Next Level.
