Trudy! On January 1, Disney+ gave users the thrill of a lifetime when it added beloved animated comedy The Proud Family to its already impressive library. The New Year’s addition was celebrated by fans, many of whom are already proclaiming the theme song — “Proud Family” by Solange Knowles ft. Destiny’s Child (!) — the song of the year. “I guess I have to start 2020 by scream singing the theme song,” tweeted comedian and writer Dewayne Perkins.
Long before diversity in children’s programming was the norm, The Proud Family introduced the world to 14-year-old African-American girl Penny Proud (voiced by Kyla Pratt) and her family and friends. The series, which ran for two seasons on Disney from 2001 to 2005, follows Penny as she navigates the ups and downs of everyday life. Between her overprotective parents (and hip grandma, Sugar Mama Proud) her best friend Dijonay, and hilariously-named nemesis LaCienega Boulevardez, Penny’s got a lot going on, but she handles it all with grace, wit, and plenty of heart.
Throughout its two-season run, The Proud Family was nominated for dozens of awards, including the Image Awards and the BET Comedy Awards, winning in 2004 for Best Animated Series. After a successful four years on Disney, the series wrapped with a feature-length Disney Channel Original Movie, The Proud Family Movie, in 2005. But that’s not all: in August 2019, star Tommy Davidson revealed that Disney+ is bringing back the animated classic for a third season.
While many fans were upset that The Proud Family wasn’t included among Disney+’s launch day offerings, they didn’t have to wait long to stream it on the new platform. On January 1, all 52 episodes of The Proud Family hit the streaming service in all their glory, much to fans’ delight. “2020 is off to a great start,” tweeted one user alongside a photo of the show’s Disney+ landing page. “The Proud Family is on Disney+ yall!!! This is not a drill!!!” wrote another. Others praised the opening track, “Proud Family” by Solange, Beyoncé’s younger sister, with backup vocals from Destiny’s Child.
The Proud Family and The Proud Family Movie are currently available to stream on Disney+.
